Carroll wins shootout to reach second round

-

Overtime wasn’t enough for Archbishop Carroll in the opening round of the PIAA Class 2A field hockey tournament Tuesday afternoon. The Patriots needed to go through a penalty-stroke shootout to get past Hershey at Arcadia University to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Grace O’Neill, Sienna Golden and Beth Wineberg scored to give Carroll a 3-1 decision in the shootout after the teams battled to a 2-2 draw in two overtimes. Carroll goalie Reilly McMenamin stopped Hershey’s fourth shooter to end the shootout.

Courtland Schumacher and Megan Sheridan scored in regulation for the Patriots. McMenamin made eight saves.

Cara Cronin scored in the fourth quarter for Hershey to send the game into overtime.

Carroll takes on District Three champ Twin Valley, a 5-3 winner over Upper Perkiomen, in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

In Class 3A:

The Jaguars came up just short in their bid to advance to the quarterfinals. Riley Gallagher scored off a feed from Nicolette Saccomandi with 4:21 left in regulation and pressed the issue, but could not get the equalizer.

“We gave them a nice run in the last four minutes,” Garnet Valley coach Sandy Leiti said. “The ball was down in our offensive end for most of the last 4:20. We hit post. We just could not capitalize.”

Erika Culp converted a corner off a pass from Emma Staron in the second quarter to get the Bulldogs on the board. She then fed Catherine Arentz for the winner with 8:55 left in the third quarter.

“We played a good game,” Leiti said. “We had some injuries we had to deal with that did affect us but the girls played hard. The good thing is we only have three seniors so we have most of the team coming back next season.”

Wilson plays Central York, the No. 3 seed out of District 3. Central York defeated District 7 champ Pine-Richland, 2-0.
