100 Years Ago – 1921:

Excellent speechmaki­ng, good music and singing, and a sumptuous repast, were features of the annual banquet of the Firemen’s Relief Associatio­n of Chester, held last evening in the Food Will fire house, Fifteenth and Potter streets. There was a good attendance and the fair was voted the best ever conducted by the associatio­n.

75 Years Ago – 1946:

Sinclair Refining Co. has a $13,000,000 expansion and improvemen­t program underway in Delaware County. Six separate projects are involved in the multi-million dollar constructi­on program. The six projects include the installati­on of a Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit, a new Polymeriza­tion plant, two additional vacuum asphalt stills, a new Road Oil plant, a 250,000-pound steam boiler and six 150,000-barrel storage tanks.

50 Years Ago – 1971:

Members of the Delaware County Republican Board of Supervisor­s

(War Board) are seriously divided over proposals for board reforms and new appointmen­ts. Eight GOP leaders, including three War Board members, said privately the crushing defeats the Republican organizati­on suffered in the Nov. 2 elections have revived demands for change within the party’s structure. Some board members represent several communitie­s each, and a frequent complaint from committee people has been that most of the board officials have failed to work closely with them on local problems.

25 Years Ago – 1996:

Three students at Widener University were awarded a W.W. Smith Scholarshi­p for the 1996-97 academic year. The W.W. Smith Charitable Trust awards about $5 million annually to organizati­ons in the Delaware Valley. The winners were nursing major Susan Reiley, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent of Reiley of Drexel Hill; psychology major Karen N. Clarke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Winston Clarke of Bryn Mawr; and nursing major Kristie L. Troilo, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Troilo of Clifton Heights.

10 Years Ago – 2011:

For his courage, profession­alism and leadership, Aston Police Sgt. Jeffrey Brown has been awarded the police department’s highest honor -the Medal of Valor. Brown, assistant leader of the Delco Tactical Team, was assigned the task of leading the entry team into a homicide suspect’s fortified position in a Trainer residence on July 4.
