75 Years Ago – 1946:
Today, Delaware County stands a step nearer to being the site of the United Nations Headquarters. While no decision can be made by the international delegates until they have visited sites near San Francisco, Boston and New York, the members of the delegation made it clear that they were greatly impressed by their reception here and in Philadelphia. Robert Gray Taylor, chairman of the Delaware Valley Association for the United Nations Headquarters, and E. Wallace Chadwick, congressman-elect, accompanied the visitors on their tour of the county.
50 Years Ago – 1971:
Marc Lamer, a 24-yearold Democrat, won a seat on the Aston Board of Commissioners in a drawing Friday with incumbent Robert H. Pennell, a member of Delaware county’s powerful Republican
Board of Supervisors (War Board). Lamer and Pennell, 50, who were tied with 313 votes each in the Nov. 2 election, each drew a pink billiard ball from a vase during the drawing county commissioner chamber presided over by Judge Louis A. Bloom.
25 Years Ago – 1996:
Upper Darby officials introduced an ordinance
at council’s meeting last night that would charge car insurance companies $200 for every vehicle accident that requires township police response. Councilman Thomas Micozzie, public safety committee chairman, proposed the collection which could mean a windfall of an estimated $730,000 or more for the police department. According to Micozzie, every vehicle owner has liability insurance which allows for certain costs for reimbursement of services including ambulance and towing. He questioned why not seek reimbursement for the police.
10 Years Ago – 2011:
The Haverford Township Planning Commission recently voted to recommend approval of the YMCA of Philadelphia’s preliminary/ final land development plans for a facility at 891 Eagle Road, on the former Philadelphia Chewing
Gum factory site. The recommendation was accompanied by conditions, not the least of which entails compliance with PennDOT requirements for site work and off-site traffic mitigation.
