100 Years Ago – 1921:
The Washburn Theatre has the distinction of being the first playhouse in Chester to comply with the new
Act of Legislature making it compulsory to display an American flag of standard size, 52 inches by 66 inches, which has been attracting much attention at the wing of the left-side boxes of the theatre. The new law requires the display of the flag of the United States at entertainments, public gatherings and public meetings. Because of the lateness of the official records of the last session, the new law has not been enforced.
75 Years Ago – 1946:
From the Times Washington Correspondent – The Chester area will become one of the largest, and perhaps the largest oil refining section of the United States if the Sinclair Refining Co. can lease the Little Big Inch pipeline from Phoenixville, Pennsylvania to Linden, N.J. Furthermore, the lease to Sinclair would not interfere in the slightest with the maximum delivery of natural gas to the eastern seaboard.
50 Years Ago – 1971:
J. Howard Pew, longtime president of Sun Oil Co., and co-founded of a Chester shipbuilding firm, died today. Pew, 89, son of the founder of Sun Oil, had been ill since August. He died at 1:30 a.m. at his home, “Knollbrook,” on Mill Creek Road in Ardmore. He was chairman of the oil company’s executive committee at the time of his death. Pew, 6’2” tall and white haired, continued an active interest in the company until August when he suffered “heart failure” and was hospitalized briefly. But after returning home to recuperate, he sometimes made trips to the corporation’s Philadelphia offices to attend executive committee and board meetings.
25 Years Ago – 1996:
From the AP, Washington – Drunken driving fatalities increased last year for the first time since 1986, Mothers Against Drunk Driving said Tuesday. In addition, efforts to lower the amount of alcohol drivers can legally consume failed in every state where an attempt was made, the group said.
10 Years Ago – 2011:
Nearly four weeks and 31 pounds after he was rescued, the once-raw-boned dog known as Curious George is still attracting attention. The Delaware County SPCA received eight adoption applications in a span of six hours after George went up for adoption Saturday afternoon. A grossly underweight Curious George was found on Naamans Creek Road in Lower Chichester.
