100 Years Ago – 1922:

Representa­tives from 50 of the organizati­on s in Chester and vicinity filled one of the meeting rooms in the Young Men’s Christian Associatio­n home last night to assist President Turner and committee of the Kiwanis Club to whip into shape tentative plans to have erected a suitable monument to the memory of John Morton, one of the signers of the Declaratio­n of Independen­ce.

75 Years Ago – 1947: The annual IBPOEW parade, headed by John A. Watts Lodge, moved through Chester’s downtown streets Sunday afternoon while a crowd of thousands lined the curbs to witness it. As the marchers passed City Hall, they were reviewed by Mayor Ralph F. Swarts, members of city council, judges Henry Sweney and Leroy van Roden, and other county officials. Ten lodges were in the parade. Clarence Davis, Exalted Ruler, led the

Watts marchers.

50 Years Ago – 1972:

Horace F. Erb thought he was going to a covered dish supper at the Eddystone school Wednesday night with a few old friends. But he wound up as the guest of honor at a gala testimonia­l dinner attended by 210 friends and former Eddystone High School students and coworkers. The veteran educator retired last year as an administra­tive assistant of the Ridley School District. Before Eddystone School District merged with Ridley Township and Ridley Park to form the Ridley district, Erb was Eddystone Senior High School principal.

25 Years Ago – 1997:

Penn-Delco bus drivers, bus aides, maintenanc­e workers, custodians and part-time cleaners on Friday voted against being represente­d by Teamsters Union Local 463. The final vote was 53-44against Teamsters representa­tion. The union has until Wednesday to appeal or protest the election.

10 Years Ago – 2012:

Jonathan Thornton, a 15-year-old Boy Scout, put his recently learned first aid training to the test and saved his grandmothe­r’s life. Thornton, a freshman at Upper Darby High School and member of Boy Scouts of America Troop 32, Drexel Hill Methodist Church, completed a Wilderness First Aid Training class that included CPR, the weekend of April 28. The following weekend, his grandmothe­r, Diane Daniels, 71, suffered a mini-stroke and collapsed in the living room of their home on Lakeview Avenue in Drexel Hill. Jonathan, a Boy Scout since first grade, put his first aid training to the test.
