100 Years Ago – 1922:

Terryl Williams, 73years old, 506 Parker St., Chester, was hurried to the Chester Hospital yesterday afternoon as the result of being struck in the head by a falling brick. Examinatio­n disclosed that he sustained laceration­s of the scalp and probably fracture of the skull.

75 Years Ago – 1947: The wide new span of Route 322 now being constructe­d in Bethel will rob Delaware County of one of its loveliest spots, as well as the site of an ancient and unusual industry. Workmen this week began to drain the old garnet mine near Boothwyn, lately a pleasant, scenic lake but 50 years ago a thriving industry. Owner of the minute, which will be filled in later to form the new road, is Elgin E. Weest, Chester attorney who lives on a farm in Bethel. An authority on its history is Mrs. Nelson Clayton, a resident of that area for many years.

50 Years Ago – 1972: Michael Landon has spent 14 of his 36 years as Little Joe Cartwright on the television western “Bonanza.” Landon departed from his cowboy image for a week to star in a 30-mnute antidrug film produced for the Army by the H.G. Peters Co., located on Mildred Avenue in the Primos section of Upper Darby. He spoke at the studio on Friday before shooting the last segment of the film.

25 Years Ago – 1997:

While expressing doubts of the feasibilit­y of opening a skating park at the site of the tennis courts at the Eddystone Elementary School, borough Councilman Dan Rodden neverthele­ss told a group of young people at Monday night’s council meeting its request for a skating area would be reviewed. Ridley Middle School sixth-grader Todd Goldhahn served as spokespers­on for the group of students who seek a site for roller bladers. Rodden, chairman of council’s recreation committee, noted the problem with liability insurance if such a park were created.

10 Years Ago – 2012:

Middletown Township held its 18th annual Community Day on the Penn State Brandywine campus Saturday, organized by the Parks and Recreation Department in conjunctio­n with the Middletown Township Business and Profession­al Associatio­n. Opening ceremonies included a moment of silence in memory of Larry Weathers Jr. and Penn State Brandywine founder/former CEO John Vairo. Pillars of the community, both men died in January.
