100 Years Ago – 1922: The Odd Fellows’ Social Organization, “Noah’s Ark No. 2,” have made extensive preparations for a cruise on Wednesday evening, when a large class of candidates will be initiated into the organization. This organization, members say, has made great process during the few months they have been organized and now have a member of 801.
75 Years Ago – 1947:
Chester and county business and industrial men turned out 160strong to honor J. Howard Pew, recently retired president of the Sun Oil Co., Wednesday night. The occasion was the annual dinner of the Chester Business Men’s Association at the Clubhouse Hotel and the awarding of the Chester Award, yearly presentation of the association. For four hours the guests dined and heard numerous speakers pay tribute to Pew. And in his speech of acceptance they heard Pew himself speak of the industrial greatness of Chester and Delaware County and make a plea for the preservation of the American system of free enterprise.
50 Years Ago – 1972:
Dan Blocker, whose portrayal of the gentle, hunking Hoss Cartwright on the “Bonanza” television series made him one of America’s best-known actors, died Saturday of two blood clots in the lung. He was 43. Blocker was a friend of Hugh G. Peters of Swarthmore who operates H.G. Peters & Co., Inc.,
525 Mildred Ave. in the Primos area Upper Darby, a commercial film company. Michael Landon, Little Joe Cartwright in the “Bonanza” series, was starring in a 30-moinute film at the Peters Studio last week.
25 Years Ago – 1997:
Marine reservists from the Folsom Marine Reserve Training Center will join with Morton borough volunteers Saturday in a cleanup campaign at Jacob’s Park, sponsored by the borough parks and recreation board. The project will also include the establishment of a walking trail at the park; Nostalgia Night at Linwood Elementary School, set for tomorrow night, promises to be a big send-off as the community celebrates the seven decades of history before the building is demolished to make way for a new school.
10 Years Ago – 2012:
Chester Township has hired a collection agency to help in its ongoing efforts to recoup nearly $50,000 in outstanding trash fees. Forty-seven properties in the township have been reported as delinquent in their trash fees, owing the borough about $49,000.
