100 Years Ago – 1922:

Visit the Grand for the last two days of its Tenth Anniversar­y Week double feature bill – Rudolph Valentino and Gloria Swanson in “Beyond The Rock;” also Wallace Reid and Geraldine Farrar in “Carmen.” No advance in price – matinee, 1.30 and 3.30, 20 cents; evening, 7 and 9, 25 cents; children, 10 cents.

75 Years Ago – 1947:

Forty-two persons were killed on the highways of Delaware County in 1946. During the same period, 1,093 were injured and 2,582 accidents were reported to local police. To cut down these staggering figures, the commission­ers of Delaware County have proclaimed the week of May 26as “Delaware County Highway Safety Week.” During that week, and for the weeks to follow, special emphasis will be placed upon highway safety, both on the part of the motorist and the pedestrian.

50 Years Ago – 1972:

A gourmet, an attorney, a redevelopm­ent technician, a stevedore and a high school student will judge hoagies Saturday. The judges will sample sandwiches made by the “Super Seven” Delaware County Hoagie Shop operators at the Great Hoagie Eat Off, on Avenue of the States between Fourth and Fifth streets in front of the 1924 Chester Courthouse. They will be judging the product of La Spada’s Original of Parkside, Morianni’s of Chester, Wojie’s Hoagie Hut of Chester Township, Pete’s Place of Brookhave, E&M’s of Upper Chichester, Buddy’s of Trainer and DiCostanza’s of Chester.

25 Years Ago – 1997:

Two women who trashed another woman’s car were ordered to pay $1,500 restitutio­n in Clifton Heights district court. The Upper Darby woman and Havertown woman agreed to pay $750 each for repair damages to the car, owned by a Sycamore Street woman, which was covered with papers and cat food and set on fire.

10 Years Ago – 2012:

The public is invited to tour the Southery Log House on Bethel Road in Bethel this weekend. The log house was built in the late 1600s in the William Penn-style that was the precursor of the row houses in Philadelph­ia. It was once a part of a 150-acre tract built by the Southery family, whose members were some of the earliest settlers in Bethel.
