Community invited to Historic Newtown Square Day
The Newtown Square Historical Society invites the community to celebrate Historic Newtown Square Day, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at the 1742 Square Tavern, Route 252 and Goshen Road, Newtown Square.
This year’s theme is “Traveling Through History in Newtown Square.”
This year’s event will look at the history of the trails and roads that are the backbone of the township, the railroad and trolley lines and the automobile. Most people don’t realize that Newtown Square was home to Roger Penske and Penske Racing from 1966 to 1973. Penske cars that won the Indy 500 and numerous Can-Am Series races were fabricated in what is now Don Kelly’s Garage on Winding Way and Niemeyer’s on 252. The day will explore many of these not-so-known historical facts about the township’s colorful history.
The day’s activities at the historic 1742 Square Tavern will include Colonial reenactors as the 1st Continental Regiment, Lenni Lenape Native Americans, a storyteller, sheep shearing, a beekeeper demonstration and honey, live music with Last Chance’s Ingrid Roseback and Jack Scott, antique cars, children’s activities and more. Historic sites including the Paper Mill House and Museum (1828), the Quaker Meeting House (1711), the 1842 Octagonal School (1842), the Newtown Square Railroad Museum (1895), St. David’s Church (1715), the Bartram Covered Bridge (1860), the Garrett Williamson Farm and Barn and the St Albans Model Railroad will be open with guides who explain the significance of the sites to visitors.
Admission to all sites and activities is free. For more information, visit http://nshistory.org.
