100 Years Ago – 1922:

Traffic rules will be made to provide recreation street centers for children, Mayor William T. Ramsey told the members of the Chester Rotary Club yesterday at the regular noon meeting and luncheon in the Chester Club. A survey of lightly used thoroughfa­res will be taken by the street department and signs will be placed at the opening and closing cautioning motorists and drivers of other vehicles to safeguard the lives of children.

75 Years Ago – 1947: In New Orleans it’s the Mardi Gras; in Costa Rica it’s the Carnival; in Philadelph­ia, it’s the Mummer’s Parade.

But in Chester it’s the May Market. Once a year, in the name of sweet charity, the entire town turns out, lets down its hair and its inhibition­s and proceeds to have a glorious time. When it’s done the townspeopl­e are exhausted, and the Chester Hospital is richer by several thousand dollars.

50 Years Ago – 1972:

Approximat­ely 80 Bell Telephone Co. repairmen walked off their jobs for 2 ½ hours Tuesday morning in a work rules dispute at the 512 Welsh St. office that was being negotiated today. The Federation of Telephone Works of Pennsylvan­ia claimed it was the responsibi­lity of its members to check the 1972 Delaware County directory to be certain new listings and changes were reported. Office Manager Donald Cook said this job has traditiona­lly a management responsibi­lity.

25 Years Ago – 1997: A burglar ransacked a Shepherd Street house Tuesday, stealing several guns, a bow, some ammunition and a laptop computer, Brookhaven police reported. The thief entered the residence through a side door to the kitchen with no signs of forced entry, police said. The burglar headed to the second floor, swiping a number of handguns and longguns, plus the bow and several boxes of ammunition, from a locked gun cabinet in a bedroom.

10 Years Ago – 2012:

Upper Darby police are investigat­ing a string of robberies targeting pedestrian­s talking on their cellphones. Thirteen robberies have been reported since May 4, according to police Superinten­dent Michael Chitwood. Most have taken place in the 69th Street area while the victims were talking on their cellphones. “All of the sudden it just exploded,” Chitwood said. “My concern is that someone is going to get hurt.”
