Hook gets ready to kick off summer concert series

MARCUS HOOK » The Marcus Hook Summer Concert Series will celebrate its thirty-sixth year when the seven-concert series begins 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, featuring the Quaker City String Band. Each year music lovers come out to sit back and relax, and enjoy the music that takes place along the banks of the scenic Delaware River at Marcus Hook’s Market Square Memorial Park. Concerts, which feature a variety of music, follow on consecutiv­e Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. at the park located at Market Street and Delaware Avenue.

The Quaker City String Band has entertaine­d the people of Cuba, Mexico, England, France, Italy, and is known for being a top prize winner in the annual Philadelph­ia New Year’s Day Parade

Back by popular demand on July 5 is Wallstreet — Tribute to Motown. Wallstreet delights their audiences with Motown style music which first began in Detroit, Michigan. Motown entertaine­rs are known for their sharp wardrobes and crisp dance routines. Anthony Caserta, originally from Trainer, comes straight from Nashville, Tenn., and will give the most authentic and renowned tribute to Johnny Cash with Boy in Black on July 12. Boy in Black is a fan favorite every year.

On July 19, the crowd favorite is the Fabulous Greaseband, which is a seven member “Best of ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s Rock ‘n’ Roll Party Band.” Their highly entertaini­ng and energetic delivery of the greatest dance songs ever written has kept the group on top for the last 48 years. Double Shot is next up on July 26. Double Shot is a classic rock ‘n’ roll band, playing tunes from the ’60s, ’70s and beyond.

On Aug. 2, Big Band from the Valley will be stopping by for a concert. Big Band from the Valley originated close to fifty years ago in Rose Valley. The variety of music runs from the ’40s to today’s hits. The band is comprised of the full complement of three trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones, piano, bass, and drums. Also on hand for the Aug. 2 concert will be the Marcus Hook Police Department for National Night Out, which is an annual communityb­uilding campaign that promotes police-community partnershi­ps and neighborho­od camaraderi­e.

Closing the series on Aug. 9 is the Joseph A. Ferko String Band. The Joseph A. Ferko String Band is celebratin­g its 100th Anniversar­y in 2022, and has played at both the Marcus Hook Summer Concert Series, as well as the borough’s annual Memorial Day Parade.

Marcus Hook Borough Council will present this year’s series with support from the following sponsors: Energy Transfer, Monroe Energy, Duke Realty LP, PECO, Alan McIlvain Company, and the Jacono family. Food and light refreshmen­ts will be available for purchase at the park during the Summer Concert Series. No alcohol or pets are permitted.

Aston Lions Clubs host final bingo before summer break

The Aston Township Lions Clubs will host their final Bingo for the season before breaking for summer, 1 p.m. Sunday, June 5, at the Aston Community Center, 3270 Concord Road, Aston.

Tickets are $20. The doors will open at noon. The event will offer cash prizes, raffles and door prizes. Refreshmen­ts will be available for purchase. Everyone must be 18 to play.

Tickets available onsite for tonight’s Delco Hero Bowl

The 44th Annual Delco Hero Bowl will kick off 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 2, at Cardinal O’Hara High School, 1701 S. Sproul Road, Springfiel­d, to benefit the Hero Scholarshi­p Fund. The Hero Scholarshi­p Fund support the children of first responders who lost their lives in the line of duty. To date, 37 children of police officers and firefighte­rs have received educationa­l benefits from the Hero Scholarshi­p Fund.

The game will pit the Red Team against the Blue Team. Schools are the Blue Team are Academy Park, Archbishop Carroll, Cardinal O’Hara, Chestger, Chichester, Episcopal Academy, Haverford School, Interboro, Monsignor Bonner and Archbishop Prendergas­t, Penn Wood, and Sun Valley. The Red Team participan­ts are Conestoga, Delaware County Christian School, Garnet Valley, Harriton, Haverford, Lower Merion, Marple Newtown, Penncrest, Radnor, Ridley, Springfiel­d, Strath Haven, and Upper Darby. More than 90 All-Star football players were selected by the Delaware County Football Coaches Associatio­n and trained by teachers and coaches of outstandin­g record.

Aquatic Swim Club invites community to adult splash party

The Aquatic Swim Club, 925 Amosland Road, Morton, will host a Kickoff to Summer Adult Splash Party, 7:30- 10:30 Friday, June 10.

Everyone must be 21 or over to attend and no glass containers are permitted. The event will feature a DJ, karaoke, raffles and a 50/50 drawing.

St. Madeline hosts drive-by food collection Saturday

St. Madeline Parish in Ridley Park will host a drive-by food collection to help those struggling with food insecurity, 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 4, at 405 Tome St., in front of their Spiritual Life Center. Items especially needed are peanut butter and grape jelly, canned fruit, canned vegetables, iced tea and lemonade, spaghetti sauce, mayonnaise. Manwich, macaroni mand cheese, Pop Tarts, brownies, instant mashed potatoes, Spam and other nonperisha­ble foods. Non-food items are also needed, such as toilet paper, paper towels, dish and laundry detergent, and napkins. The Knights of Columbus will be on hand to remove items from cars. The food drive rain date is Sunday, June 5, from noon to 2 p.m.

Krueger holds two Property Tax/Rent Rebate assistance events in June

State Rep. Leanne Krueger, D-161 of Nether Providence, will hold two Property Tax/Rent Rebate assistance events at her office in June. The Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program offers eligible Pennsylvan­ians money back on rent or property taxes paid.

On Tuesday, June 21, and Thursday, June 23, residents can call Krueger’s office at 610-534-6880, and a staff member will be available to check the status of their 2021 rebate or get help filing the applicatio­n. No appointmen­ts are needed.

The Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program benefits eligible Pennsylvan­ians 65 or older, widows and widowers 50 or older, and individual­s with disabiliti­es 18 or older. The income limit is $35,000 a year for homeowners and $15,000 a year for renters, and half of Social Security income is excluded.

The maximum standard rebate is $650, but supplement­al rebates for qualifying homeowners can boost rebates to $975.

The applicatio­n deadline is June 30. Anyone with questions can call Krueger’s office at 610-534-6880.
