Reservations being taken for Delco Sports Hall of Fame dinner
The Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame’s Delaware County Chapter will hold its 40th Induction Dinner at Springfield County Club Sunday, June 26.
The social hour begins at 4 p.m., with dinner served at 5 p.m., followed by the awards ceremony.
Ten individuals will join the Hall of Fame, and the chapter also will recognize a number of high school senior student-athletes as well as a Special Olympics participant, a student-athlete who persevered despite physical limitations, and an individual who has given much of his time to help others succeed in athletics as well as education.
Joining the Hall of Fame will be basketball referee Mike “Duke” Callahan; basketball players Charles “Buff” Kirkand, Wilbur Kirkland and Maureen Logan; lacrosse player Jill Davis; lacrosse coach Michele Doyle; multi-sport athlete and coach Harry Jones and multi-sport athlete Brett Moyer; tennis player and coach Dr. Mike Mullan; and former basketball coach and equipment manager the late John DiGregorio Sr.
Callahan, a Cardinal O’Hara High graduate who retired after working the 2019 National Basketball Association Finals, spent 29 years in the NBA, working more than 225 playoff games and 20 championship round contests. He works for the league in the training and development of officials. Charles Kirkland, who graduated from Chester High School, was an All-American at Cheyney University, and played professionally in Holland for eight seasons, helping five teams win playoff championships.
Wilbur Kirkland, another graduate of Chester High, also earned All-American honors at Cheyney and played professionally in Europe for eight years, setting offensive and defensive rebounding records in the Italian Pro League.
Logan, an All-Delco player at Archbishop Carroll High School, earned a scholarship to St. Francis College, where she was a four-year starter and set school records for assists and steals. She was inducted into the St. Francis Hall of Fame in 2003.
Davis, an All-Delco and High School All-America at Ridley High, spent several seasons as girls lacrosse coach at her alma mater. She earned the National Scholar-Athlete Award while playing at La Salle University. She earned All-Atlantic 10 honors as a player and was Eastern Collegiate Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She was inducted into La Salle’s Hall of Fame in 2022.
Doyle, who played lacrosse at West Chester University, was a Penncrest High teacher and coach for more than 30 years, also serving as the school’s athletic director. She is former PIAA District 1 girls’ lacrosse chairperson. She is a member of United States Women’s Lacrosse Association Hall of Fame and the Eastern Pennsylvania Women’s Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
Jones, a graduate of Nether Providence High School and inductee of Wallingford-Swarthmore
School District Wall of Fame, was made the All Conference team at Western Kentucky University, where he was the first Black baseball player at the school. He was Delco Baseball League Rookie of the Year, and later was girls’ basketball coach at Strath Haven High School. He was the founder of the Consulting for Next Level scholarship program for high school athletes as well as Founding Pastor of the Abounding Grace Church of Delaware County.
Moyer, who was an All Delco football and lacrosse player at Ridley High, helped the Green Raiders to the 2001 Central League and state lacrosse titles and was an All-State and High School All-America selection in 2002, when Ridley lacrosse had a 23-0 record and earned its second consecutive state title. He was a three-time All-America in lacrosse at Hofstra University and played professionally for the Philadelphia Wings and Philadelphia Barrage.
Mullan, a graduate of Springfield High School, was singles champion at the 1966 and 1967 state tennis tournaments. He played at the University of California at Berkeley, then earned a spot in the United States Open as a professional player. He has conducted a number of teaching clinics overseas. In 40 years as head tennis coach at Swarthmore College, 52 of his players earned All American honors, and his teams won Division III national championships in 1981, 1985 and 1990 and placed second in 1989.
DiGregorio Sr., a native of Philadelphia and longtime resident of Ridley Park, graduated from Dobbins Vocational School, where he played basketball and baseball. He helped organize and coach many sports for the Ridley Township Athletic Association. While he was basketball coach, his men’s teams won championships in the Philadelphia and Narberth leagues as well as in the Philadelphia Department of Recreation Gold Medal Tournament. In 1970, he became equipment manager at Temple University, where he worked for 25 years. He also worked as equipment manager with the Wilmington Comets, Philadelphia Bulldogs, Pottstown Firebirds, and Aston Knights professional minor-league football teams. He died in 2009.

Knights of Columbus hold beef and beer to benefit Ukrainian refugees
St. John Chrysostom Parish, 607 S. Providence Road, Wallingford, will hold a Beef and Beer to benefit Ukrainian and local refugees, 7-11 p.m. Saturday, June 18.
Tickets cost $40 and will include a buffet, beer, soda, and water. People can bring their own additional beverages. The event is organized by the Knights of Columbus Council #10935. AMVETS Post #118 needs bartenders, care package donations
The Harold Paul Saks AMVETS Post #118 in Morton is looking for a few bartenders. AMVETS Commander H. Bilbee said veterans and sons or daughters of veterans are preferred. The Amvets send care packages to U.S. troops every month and they can always use some help. Monetary donations are needed to ship the packages, as well as items like candy, snacks, soap, toothpaste, pens, dry soup and other items that the troops will appreciate.
