100 Years Ago – 1922: The project to build a $1 million hotel, a market house to accommodate
100 farmers, an ornamental light system for the business center of the city, and to make a reality of Chester’s proposed civic center, was given a big boost last night at meeting attended by all of the property owners on Edgmont Avenue between Third Street and Sproul Street, either in person or by their attorneys. The plan is an endorsement of the proposition of the Chester Kiwanis Club for a greater Chester and there is every indication that by 1926Chester will have a hotel that will be in keeping with first-class hostelries of other cities, and other improvements that will insure the expansion of Chester.
75 Years Ago – 1947:
Due to a legal controversy over daylight saving time, and the dizzy but legitimate manipulation of the bond business, the entire $2,400,000bond issue of the Chester Municipal Water Authority was sold in New York before the local board members had opened the five bids submitted. Bear, Stearns and company of New York won the bid for the bonds by offering a net interest cost of 2.1056 per cent, and a premium of $432.
50 Years Ago – 1972:
A series of explosions and fire
Monday night heavily damaged the Advance Specialty Co., Inc., at South Union Avenue in Lasndowne, and cut service on the Media line of Penn Central Railroad for more than five hours. Firemen from seven companies battled the blaze for more than an hour after the first alarm was sounded at 9:43 p.m., as dense smoke enveloped the area, surrounding the plant that manufactured welded wire assemblies.

For the Holefelder family, it’s a lucky Friday the 13th when their Village Green Mobile Home Community celebrates its 60th anniversary today. To mark the family’s five-generation history of doing business in Aston and its six decades of operating Village Green, a party will be held that day for residents.
10 Years Ago – 2012:
Chester Upland School District acting Superintendent Dr. Tony Watson on Monday night presented a reconfiguration option for the 2012-2013 school year. Among the changes Watson proposed are: The separation of grades 6-8 from the existing elementary schools; having two high schools -- Chester High and a STEM or magnet school; two middle schools; and four elementary schools.
