100 Years Ago – 1922:

One man was slightly hurt and four other persons escaped death by a narrow margin when a truck belonging to the Liberty Bottling Works, of 310 Reaney St., Chester, was struck by a westbound flyer on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, at Ogden Station, early last evening.

75 Years Ago – 1947:

The House-approved bill creating the Port of Chester was passed Saturday by the state Senate as the General Assembly ended six days and nights of meetings. Signature of the governor is all that is needed to give the Port of Chester state status, having been a thriving port ever since the Swedes and Finns first sailed to the local banks of the Delaware, back in 1643. The six riverfront municipali­ties of Chester, Eddystone, Ridley Township, Tinicum, Trainer and Marcus Nook are establishe­d as the Port of Chester for purposes of navigation and commerce, under provisions of the bill introduced by Rep. Louis A. Bloom, R-Chester.

50 Years Ago – 1972:

Expectatio­ns are high that the $18 million Chester High School -- now a maze of steel, partiallyl­aid bricks and unfinished floors -– will be completed on schedule. That’s the word from John Joyce, constructi­on supervisor, who said a six-week strike by concrete truck drivers had little effect on the project. Joyce said the building is nearing the half-way mark of an anticipate­d December 1973 completion date.

25 Years Ago – 1997:A Delaware County councilman has joined the fight against ATM surcharges, saying banks that do business with the county should stop gouging residents and eliminate the fees. Councilman John McFadden is urging council to re-bid its banking package to favor banks that don’t charge ATM fees. Other council members are backing the proposal. “Frankly, I think it’s stealing,” he said. “I personally won’t deal with a bank who charges those fees.”

10 Years Ago – 2012:

The Chester Upland School District is eliminatin­g its police staff in an effort to remove gun-carrying personnel from the district, acting Superinten­dent Tony Watson said Thursday. Watson termed the move a reduction from a police department to a security department. The officers comprised the Chester Upland Police Department and were not a part of the Chester Police Department.
