Other Times
100 Years Ago – 1922:
Richard Wetherill, receiver for the Baldt Anchor and Chain Co., yesterday performed his first official act by taking legal possession of the plant, which is located at Sixth and Butler streets, Chester. Like many other manufacturing concerns throughout the country this corporation, it is believed, suffered heavily throughout shrinkage of values incident to postwar economic conditions. 75 Years Ago – 1947: George D. Marvil, of Darby, was elected chairman of the Delaware County Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis at that group’s annual meeting. He succeeds George J. White, who has served as chairman for the past four years.
50 Years Ago – 1972:
The wife of Delaware County’s first winner in the $1 million Pennsylvania lottery is suing for divorce and increased child support payments. The Folcroft woman has also petitioned the court for a $50,000 security deposit to insure child support in the event her husband fails to return to this country after a summer vacation in Greece. The couple has been separated for about eight years, according to testimony in court Friday. The husband has been living behind store, a Fairmount Avenue restaurant in Philadelphia.
25 Years Ago – 1997:
That’s a Kia, not IKEA. The similarity ends with the pronunciation, however, because one’s a car. Any unfamiliarity should be short-lived, however, after Kia Motors drives into Delaware County by the end of next week. Chapman Lincoln/Mercury on the Baltimore Pike has prepared a showroom in an adjacent building for the first delivery of Koreanbuilt vehicles. The Chapman opening is part of a well-coordinated, marketby-market effort of new dealership rollouts that began three years ago.
10 Years Ago – 2012:
The two new ramps connecting the Commodore Barry Bridge with Route 291 in Chester have allowed PennDOT to receive two awards. The awards for the ramps, which opened in October 2011, are the Diamond Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania and the Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award from the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers. PennDOT created the interchange by building the two ramps with a $77.1 million construction project.
