100 Years Ago — 1922:

Penn Forest No. 21, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, have accepted the invitation from Wildwood, J.N. (N.J.), to participat­e in the annual “beach Day” to be held Saturday, July 29. The entire band and rangers have arranged for special rehearsals during the warm weather weeks so as to be in the best of trim to compete for the prizes which will bring out the best forests in Pennsylvan­ia, New York and New Jersey.

75 Years Ago — 1947:

It wouldn’t have been hard to convince George L. Bow that money really does grow on trees — at least not for a short while Tuesday. Bow, an unemployed engineer who lives in the Feltonvill­e trailer camp on Route 22 near Chester, was driving along the Baltimore Pike near Pennell Road, Lima, when he saw a flurry for green stuff on the road. “That looks like money,” he said to himself. And it was, $1,900 in all — in $100 bills. Robert B. Taylor, quickly claimed the money from the State Police at Glenolden by Robert B. Taylor, 50, a Greenville, S.C., used car dealer.

50 Years Ago — 1972: The past and the future came together on Friday

when PMC Colleges officially changed its name to Widener College. The name change was formally recognized by a

small group of students, faculty, and administra­tors who gathered in the Bernard L. Schwartz Physical Education Center fieldhouse to watch college President Dr. Clarence R. Moll kick a football lettered “Widener College” to symbolize the beginning of a new era for the college. Col. Carl Schaubel, administra­tive vice president, said the event was “nostalgic” for anyone who had gone through the cadet program.

25 Years Ago — 1997: Members of the Concord Country Club made final settlement Friday for the purchase of the 70 yearold facility from Gerret VonS Copeland, a relative of the DuPont family. The members leased the facility from Copeland, said Robert Bishop, club general manager. The 700 members held a bond drive to raise about half of the club’s $4.8 million price and took out a 20-year mortgage with the Wilmington Trust for the remainder.

10 Years Ago — 2012: The Delaware County Chapter of the Pennsylvan­ia Sports Hall of Fame inducted the 12 new members of its Hall and presented several other awards at its annual awards dinner at the Springfiel­d Country Club last weekend. Entering the Hall of Fame were Glenn Bennett, Ray Davis, Denise Dillon, Doug Ellers, Brian Fili, Curt Fromal, Roger Kochman, Larry Larson (deceased), Kenneth Leonard (deceased), Carmen Lex, John Maglio and Harry O’Neill (deceased).
