The way the current heat wave is trending, it won’t be safe — or at least comfortable — to do any recreational activities outdoors likely until the second week in November. After bingeing the latest seasons of ‘The Boys’ and ‘Virgin River,’ the options begin to run dry. But, have you thought about catching this year’s Lollapalooza live…from the comfort of your couch?

Hulu is the official streaming destination of Lollapalooza 2022, which takes place in Chicago’s Grant Park beginning July 28 through July 31. Subscribers to the streaming service will be able to tune into the exclusive livestream of the festival at no additional cost. New and eligible returning Hulu subscribers can sign up for a free trial.

Though it began as an alternative rock heavy touring festival in the early 90s, Lollapalooza

has morphed into one of the leading multi-day destination events since it put roots

down in Chicago in 2005. The brainchild of Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell, Lolla now features artists across a multitude of genres from mainstream pop to hip hop to rock to heavy metal.

This year’s Lollapalooza will see dozens of acts over the four day long stretch, and while it would be impossible to broadcast all the performances, Hulu’s preliminary schedule — released this week — is no joke. It kicks off with a bang destined to shake the foundations of the Windy City with Metallica next Thursday. Swedish singer/songwriter Tove Lo and UK indie rockers are scheduled as well.

Beginning Friday night, Hulu will present two channels of Lollapalooza streaming. Machine Gun Kelly, who has drawn the ire of many rock fans for jumping genres from hip-hop to pop punk, will be one of the headliners. He’ll be joined by rapper Don Toliver, piano house sensation LP Giobbi and R&B star Tinashe among others on the docket.

Saturday is the one Rock Music Menu will be glued to, with UK punk rockers IDLES headlining, emo legends Dashboard Confessional performing a late afternoon set, Norwegian DJ Kygo spinning and indie rock outfit Wallows just a few of the names set to appear on Hulu.

The final night of Lollapalooza, Sunday, will spotlight Perry Farrell’s first postJane’s Addiction unit Porno for Pyros, who reunited a couple of years back. Even bigger than that will be J-Hope, of the K-Pop megastars BTS, who will make history as the first South Korean artist to headline a major music festival in the United States. It’s also required by law for me to remind all their fans that BTS haven’t broken up; the boy band are simply taking a little break so its members can spread their solo wings a bit…at least that’s what they said in an announcement last month.

VINYL OF THE WEEK

Keep an eye on this spot as each week we’ll be looking at new or soon-to-be-released vinyl from a variety of artists. It might be a re-pressing of a landmark recording, special edition or new collection from a legendary act. This week, it’s the latest release in the acclaimed “small batch” audiophile series from Craft Recordings.

MILES DAVIS: ‘RELAXIN’ WITH THE MILES DAVIS QUINTET’

A pivotal title in Miles Davis’ incomparable catalog, the 1956 recording ‘Relaxin’ with the Miles Davis Quintet’ features a who’s who of jazz greats, including John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Red Garland on piano,

Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. It was a no-brainer to be an addition into the carefully curated small batch vinyl series devoted to creating the highest quality vinyl reissues of legendary recordings from the Craft catalog.

‘Relaxin’’ finds Miles Davis and his legendary sidemen at the top of their game. First assembled in 1955, the trumpeter’s “First Great Quintet” became the dominant small jazz group of the era and was essential in defining the hard-bop genre due in no small part to the deft interplay between the supremely talented musicians.

Those skillful collaborative moments can be heard throughout the six selections on the LP, which are split between bebop standards in

Dizzy Gillespie’s “Woody ‘n’ You,” Sonny Rollins’ “Oleo” and Broadway balladry like “I Could Write a Book,” “You’re My Everything” and “It Could Happen to You.” “If I Were a Bell,” from the musical Guys and Dolls, was released as a single alongside the album and has long been considered a standout track.

As with previous Small Batch albums, ‘Relaxin’ with the

Miles Davis Quintet’ was mastered from its original analog tapes by Bernie Grundman and pressed on 180gram vinyl at RTI using Neotech’s VR900

compound and a one-step lacquer process — as opposed to the standard three-step process — allowing for the utmost level of musical detail, clarity, and dynamics while reducing the amount of surface noise on the record. The limited nature of these pressings guarantees that each record is a true representation of the original lacquer and is as close as the listener can get to the original recording.

Each pressing of ‘Relaxin’’ is individually numbered and encased in a foil-stamped, linenwrapped slipcase featuring an acrylic inset of the original artwork. The vinyl disc, extractable through a unique, frictionless ribbon pull tab, is housed in a reproduction of the album’s original tip-on jacket from Prestige Records and protected by an archival-quality, anti-static, non-scratching inner sleeve. There are also fresh liner notes from the Grammy Award-winning music historian, journalist and producer, Ashley Kahn, complete the package.

Limited to just 5,000 copies, ‘Relaxin’ with the Miles Davis Quintet’ can be found online at craftrecordings.com.
