Shortly after 3.30o’clock yesterday afternoon, during which time office buildings were lighted as at night and trolleys and automobiles flashed on their headlights, one of the worst thunder and lightning storms experienced in many years visited here and practically crippled vehicular traffic in all section of the city. The storm resembled a miniature cloudburst and was accompanied by large hail stones. Lightning played havoc with telephones and telegraph wires. Hundreds of person attending the Delaware County Fair were given a severe drenching and were pelted with hail stones as they scattered for shelter. The late afternoon features of the program had to be called off.

A clergyman, a former Chester High School teacher, a prominent business man, and a civic-minded housewife have pledged their time and experience to the interest of an un-bossed, progressive school system for the City of Chester.
The four candidates for School Director backed by the Republican Campaign Committee of the city are Rev. John L. Link, presiding elder of the Penn-Del District of the AME Church; Alexander H. Brown, proprietor of the Chester Arms Pharmacy, Fifth Street and Edgmont Avenue; Willis Wissler, Jr., proprietor of the Chester Multi-copy Service, and Mrs. J. Wesley Jones, of 2227 Upland St. 50 years ago, 1972: From UPI, Reykjavik — Bobby Fischer won the world chess championship today when Russia defender Boris Spassky telephoned his resignation in the 21st game of their $250,000 match. Fischer, 29, thus fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming the first American world chess champion of modern times — a dream that had driven him for 20 years.
25 years ago, 1997: Princess Diana, killed Sunday in a Paris car crash, will be remembered Wednesday in a county-wide service at the Middletown Presbyterian Church. “”She was as popular with Americans as she was with the British,” said Pastor Charles Jones of the Middletown Presbyterian Church. “”She was a princess of the people.” Jones, who toured Buckingham Place with his wife just three weeks ago, said the death of the mother of the future King of Great Britain has touched him deeply.

The Chester Boys and Girls Club wrapped up its second summer camp in its new facility earlier this month. The full-day camp, which ran from June 18 to Aug. 10, mixed mentoring and tutoring sessions with athletic and recreational activities like swimming. It also featured a trip to the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia and guest speakers who focused on peer pressure, self-esteem and college preparedness.
