ChiSox manager La Russa out indefinite­ly with health issue

CHICAGO >> White Sox manager Tony La Russa is out indefinite­ly because of an unspecifie­d health issue.

La Russa, 77, missed Tuesday’s 9-7 loss to Kansas City on the recommenda­tion of his doctors. The team said he is scheduled to undergo additional testing in Arizona with his personal physicians “over the coming days.”

La Russa is in the second season of his second managerial stint with Chicago. The team began the year with championsh­ip aspiration­s, but it has been one of baseball’s biggest disappoint­ments.

Gruden ‘ashamed’ about emails

LITTLE ROCK, ARK. >> Former Raiders coach Jon Gruden says he is “ashamed” about his old offensive emails that cost him his job and hopes to get another chance in football.

The New York Times and Wall Street Journal of emails he had sent from 201118 that contained racist, homophobic and misogynist­ic comments.

“I’m ashamed about what has come about in these emails, and I’ll make no excuses for it,” he said. “It’s shameful. But I am a good person. I believe that. I go to church. I’ve been married for 31 years. I’ve got three great boys. I still love football. I’ve made some mistakes. But I don’t think anybody in here hasn’t. And I just ask for forgivenes­s, and hopefully, I get another shot.”

Hamlin to miss Xfinity event

HUNTERSVIL­LE, N.C. >> Denny Hamlin is still sore from last week’s late wreck at Daytona and won’t race, as planned, in the Xfinity Series event at Darlington Raceway on Saturday.

Hamlin will be full go for the Southern 500 on Sunday, the start of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.

Rays’ McClanahan to IL

MIAMI >> The Rays placed ace lefthander Shane McClanahan on the 15day injured list because of a left shoulder impingemen­t on Wednesday, a day after he was a late scratch from Tampa Bay’s 7-2 win over the Miami Marlins.

McClanahan cut his pregame warmup short Tuesday because of the injury. He later said “something just didn’t feel right.”

McClanahan underwent imaging on his shoulder Wednesday, which revealed a “best case scenario,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said.

Donald: ‘It was just a practice’

Aaron Donald downplayed swinging a helmet at Bengals players in a brawl at a joint practice between last season’s Super Bowl teams last Thursday.

“It was just a practice. It was football,” Donald said in an interview for an upcoming episode of the AP Pro Football Podcast. “I don’t really wanna go back to nothing negative that happened and talk about something that happened in a practice. My main focus is Buffalo.”

Asked if he addressed the incident with his teammates and Rams coach Sean McVay and if everything was OK, Donald only said “yes.”
