Chachere now a full-fledged Eagle

The Eagles on Tuesday filled a vacancy on their 53-man roster by signing practice squad player Andre Chachere. He’s expected to add depth at defensive back while continuing work with special teams.

Chachere had been temporarily elevated for three other games, the maximum allowed to fill in for a practice squad player, and by rule a fourth callup necessitated adding him to the active roster.

The vacancy was created when the Birds had to put defensive tackle Jordan Davis (high ankle sprain) on the injured reserve list last week. Chachere, who had the secondmost special teams snaps of any Eagle last season, was already in on 50 special teams snaps this season.

To fill Chachere’s spot on the practice squad, the Birds signed tackle Fred Johnson, waived earlier this month by the Tampa Bay Bucs.

Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon Tuesday was asked about the difference between playing a Washington Commanders team with Taylor Heinicke in command as opposed to former starter Carson Wentz.

The ex-Eagle is on injured reserve with a finger issue.

“I think he presents a certain challenge because he can make a lot of off-schedule plays,” Gannon said of Heinicke. “He doesn’t have a lot of fear of throwing the ball into coverage, and he’s got good skill guys around him and he gives them chances to make plays on 50-50 balls, which you’ve seen him do as he’s come back in a little bit.

“It’s basically the same offense to me. It’s just that he can move around and make some off-schedule plays, which that presents a different challenge to us when we rush and when we cover.”

Heinicke had the Commanders in the game late with the now 7-1 Vikings last Sunday but threw a crucial interception which helped allow the Vikes to win it.
