Penn’s Padilla hits 1,000th point, game-winner vs. Temple

Kayla Padilla first put her name in the University of Penn record books, then delivered the gamewinnin­g basket Sunday afternoon.

Padilla’s layup with six seconds left gave the Quakers a 62-61 victory over Temple in a Big 5 showdown at the Palestra.

The 5-9 senior guard eclipsed 1,000 points for her career with a 28-point performanc­e. She was 10for-21 shooting from the floor, including 6-for-13 from 3-point range. She reached the milestone in only 58 games, the thirdfaste­st in Penn women’s history behind the program’s all-time leading scorer, Diana Caramanico (48 games), and Mary West (52 games).

Jordan Obi produced 16 points and eight rebounds, while freshman Simone Sawyer tallied 13 points for the Quakers (6-5), who have won five straight decisions.

Tiarra East came off the bench to score 23 points for the Owls (4-6). East broke a 57-all tie with 1:19 left, as Temple led by four with 26 seconds left.

Jasha Clinton added 15 points, and Aleah Nelson had 11 for the Owls.

Keishana Washington poured in 33 points. Maura Hendrixson, the 2019 Daily Times Player of the Year from Cardinal O’Hara, added six points and four assists for Drexel. ELIZABETHT­OWN 69, CABRINI 42 » Brielle Fitzpatric­k scored a team-high 14 points and Abby Paolini added nine for the Cavaliers (2-8), who have lost six straight games.

Ridley graduate Lindsay Boyd had six points, six rebounds and three steals for the host Blue Jays (7-0).
