Police awash in scam reports

- By Pete Bannan Pbannan@Mainlinemedianews.com

This week Springfield Township Police Chief Joe Daly reached out to all township homes on a robocall with a crime alert involving computer and phone scams.

A review of the police reports shows what seems to be a daily list of local residents dealing with online scams and fraud.

Daly said scams are on the rise and members and residents of all ages have and been victimized by the well trained and convincing con artists.

“These unscrupulous individuals deploy a variety of fraudulent schemes but the common denominator in every scam is to extract money from unsuspecting victims,” Daly said.

He said, “If you are the recipient of unsolicited phone calls or online contacts where you are requested to do any of the following, you are about to become a victim: Provide remote access to your computer; purchase gift cards or send cash; allow access to your online banking or investment accounts; provide bail or cash for a loved one allegedly arrested or involved in an accident or another calamity; send money to an app, such as Zelle, Apple Cash, Venmo, etc.; obtain cash for a carrier to pick up at your home; pay advance taxes on any unexpected windfall or prize winnings; and send compromising pictures of yourself.”

Daly said that it is important to understand that no legitimate organization would prohibit you from obtaining verification before sending money.

“If in doubt, call 911 and an officer will gladly respond to guide you,” Daly said. “Being informed is the key to preventing becoming a victim. Please share this information with all those you care for.”
