Days Gone By

100 Years Ago, 1923:

There promises to soon to be considerable school building in the city and county. Since the war started, building prices were so high that the citizens hesitated to approve of bond issues necessary for new school buildings. The new GlenNor High School, which is nearly completed and in which the heat was turned on this week, will not only provide for all the high school pupils in Glenolden and Norwood, but it is expected that a number of pupils from Essington, who now go all the way to the Upper Darby High School, at Drexel Hill, will, in the future, attend the Glen-Nor school. 75 Years Ago, 1948: A signal honor has just been conferred upon a Chester clergyman. Rev. Dr. J. Pius Barbour, 1614 West Second St., pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, historic 72-year-old congregation, has been appointed a representative from the National Baptist Convention to the World Assembly of Churches to meet in Amsterdam next August. Dr. Barbour, who has lived in Chester for the past 15 years, is also editor of the National Baptist Voice, a national religious magazine, succeeding his brother, Rev. Russell Conwell Barbour, when he died five years ago.

50 Years Ago, 1973: Unofficially, Delaware County had the first snowstorm of the season Friday night. However, the National Weather Service called the precipitation Friday only “a trace.” The snow, which began about 5:30 p.m., was more spectacular than lasting. The winds swirled the snow across highways and from roof tops, creating an eerie show in front of auto headlights. About 7 p.m. the road surfaces became slippery and Pennsylvania Department of Highway crews salted and cindered, easing traffic problems.

25 Years Ago, 1998:

The Wallingford-Swarthmore School Board last night gave first reading to a proposed policy that, if adopted, would charge students in sixth- through 12-grades a fee of $50 to participate in any athletic or non-athletic co-curricular activity. “”This is an effort to shift some of the burden from the taxpayer to the student,” explained Superintendent Bruce Kowalski. He estimated that 75 to 80 percent of all students participate in some type of extracurricular activity.

10 Years Ago, 2013:

From chemicals in the Delaware River to toxins in our body to safe paint, noxious elements were the focus for the Eighth Annual Environmental Summit at the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum. About 40 people spent part of their Saturday learning about “Emerging Toxins in the Environment and Home” at the Delco Concerned Citizens for Environmental Change event.
