Sun Valley wins team title, places 7 at regionals
Sun Valley had seven wrestlers finish in the top three to win the District 1 Class 3A West sectional at Oxford.
All seven advanced to next weekend’s South East Regional at Souderton.
Alexander Gamble-Williams was the only Vanguard to claim an individual title. He went 3-0 to win the 152-pound crown. He pinned Henderson’s Xavier Hawkins in the quarterfinals (4:18), beat Coatesville’s Jacob Ruttmann in the semifinals (9-6) and defeated Kennett’s Tyler Maiers to win the championship, 12-4. It was his second straight district title.
John Deorio (107), Hunter Delaney (127), Brecken Strickland (133), Brandon Carr (145) and Chase Thompson all placed second, while Tim Kearney (114) was third.
Deorio recorded two wins by fall before falling to Brayden Sigle of Downingtown West, 4-2. Delaney had a pin and a win by technical fall before he dropped a 4-0 decision to Kennett’s Blake Boyer. Carr opened with two pins before losing to Max Parnis of West Chester East, 14-7. Thompson had two second-period pins before dropping a 9-5 decision to John Pardo of Kennett in the final. Kearney went 3-1 and pinned Logan McMillan of Oxford in 1:45 to take the bronze medal. William Cadden (160) took fifth place, and Alex Alvarez (172) and
Anthony Laird (285) both placed sixth for the Vanguards.
Joe DiMarino (127), Paxton Hunt (139) and Dylan Bledsoe (285) all advanced to the regional for Garnet Valley. DiMarino placed fourth, while Hunt and Bledsoe both finished third. Hunt downed Angus Whittaker of Henderson, 6-4, for his bronze medal and Bledsoe beat Adham Abouraya in an ultimate tiebreaker. Nolan Carroll (121) finished sixth, Ethan Bliss (133) and Matt Mesaros (152) both placed sixth for the Jaguars.
Blake Bryant and Montana Raymond of Chichester also are headed to the regional. Bryant beat Kennett’s Michael Pepe, 10-2, for third place at 145 pounds. Raymond defeated Stephen Beatty of Henderson, 6-4, to place third at 215.
Louie DiLuzio of Marple Newtown took fifth at 189. Jimmy Hally was the No. 1 seed at 172 for the Tigers but did not make weight and the bracket had to be readjusted. Shane Worley (127), Dylan DeJone (145) and Liam Stauffer (189) all finished sixth for Penncrest.
Radnor had three wrestlers advance to the regional out of the District 1 Class 3A North sectional. Arik Behar finished second at 145. Akahi Heywood was third at 107 and Anton Skyortsov was fourth at 215. Zach Fluck (133) and Keaton Monaghan (285) finished fifth for the Raptors, while Mason Shieh (172) placed sixth.
