100 Years Ago, 1923: The arrival of a son or daughter to brighten the home being of interest not only to the parents and immediate relatives but to friends as well, the Times, beginning with today’s issue, will publish once weekly, the list of births as reported to the local Registrar of Vital Statistics, John W. Shaw, in charge of the Health Office of the Department of Public Safety. This week’s list is that of births reported to date for the month of February.

75 Years Ago, 1948: Thomas B. McCabe, of Chester, President Truman’s nominee as chairman and member of the Federal Reserve System, will be questioned by the Senate Banking and Currency Committee Wednesday morning in an open hearing. This committee holds the power of recommendi­ng or withholdin­g confirmati­on of the nominee by the U.S. Senate. It is seldom that the Senate as a whole overrules the action of its committee.

50 Years Ago, 1973: The newlook Philadelph­ia Eagles may have a new-look summer training camp soon. Although the National Football League team still has a contract with Albright College in Reading for this summer, it has been learned that Eagles officials are looking for a way to get out of that agreement and sign one with Widener College officials. George A. Hansell, director of athletics at Widener College, said today: “The Eagles have asked us about coming to Widener College for summer training camp this year. They have visited the college and liked the facilities, particular­ly the new Schwartz Physical Education Center.”

25 Years Ago, 1998: Two Delaware County exhibitors took numerous awards, including Best in Show in separate categories, at the 1998 Philadelph­ia Flower Show. Winning Best in Show Landscape was Stoney Bank Nurseries in Glen Mills. Winning Best in Show Academic Education was Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades in Middletown. Other winners included J. Franklin Styer’s Nurseries in Concordvil­le: Best Achievemen­t in Landscape for Use of Color and Whimsy.

10 Years Ago, 2013: Three Upper Darby police officers delivered a healthy 7-pound baby girl late Thursday night in the back room of a hair salon. Officers Michael Taylor, Stephen Oreskovich and Francis Devine each did their part to deliver and care for the newborn baby. The mother, Holeou R. Bambara, 24, of Philadelph­ia, was waiting for a ride from a friend inside Zena’s Hair Salon, 7016 Terminal Square, when she went into labor. Her friend, Sara Tamba, of Philadelph­ia, who had planned to drive Bambara to the hospital called 911.
