Smith, Brugler, Ziegler power Saint Joe’s women

Mackenzie Smith, Talya Brugler and Laura Ziegler combined for 45 points to lead Saint Joseph’s to a 6453 victory over Davidson in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament.

The sixth-seeeded Hawks (20-9) will face No. 3 Saint Louis in the quarterfin­als on Friday (7:30 p.m.) at the Chase Fieldhouse in Wilmington.

Smith scored 10 of her team-high 17 points in the third quarter as the Hawks outscored the Wildcats, 2311 to take a 47-33 lead into the fourth quarter. She also pulled down eight rebounds. Brugler had 15 points and four boards. Ziegler chipped in with 13 points, three rebounds and two assists.

The Explorers got within one possession several times but could not take the lead against the Patriots in the second round of the Atlantic 10 tournament.

Sonia Smith had 18 points for ninth-seeded George Mason, which will play topseeded Massachuse­tts at 11 a.m. in the quarterfin­als.

Kayla Spruill topped La Salle (17-14) with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Claire Jacobs pitched in 10 points.

Men’s Basketball

Nick Jourdain saved the day for Temple.

Jourdain’s put-back basket with one second left gave the Owls a 57-55 victory over Central Florida.

Damian Dunn went to the free throw line with two seconds left and Temple down 55-54. He made the first to tie the game, but missed the second. Jourdain followed it up to give the Owls the win.

Dunn finished with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists. Jourdain had 10 points and nine boards while Zach Hicks also scored 10 points for Temple.
