Call to action over disruptive train horns

-

Editor:

Our peaceful, serene neighborhood seems to be under assault since August.

Township/borough noise ordinances have not been taken into consideration regarding the impact to adjacent residential communities and are being ignored. (“Train horns keeping them up at night” Daily Times, March 9)

Approximately 40 SEPTA trains crossing the Lenni Road grade on the new Wawa rail line, are blasting 110-decibel air horns (four blasts per crossing) that resonate through the valley from 4:45 a.m. until about 1 a.m.

Additional horn blasts have been heard during maintenance at the rail yard between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

The “quiet enjoyment” of our homes has been disrupted, to say the least. In the silence of the night, we are jolted awake by 110-decibal horns blasted at multiple intervals.

In 2018, a local resident advised SEPTA and Middletown Township of concern with SEPTA’s plans and the subsequent impact of noise to the surrounding area.

This would have been the time to research the possibility of a noise disturbance issue. A resolution, if needed, could have been incorporated while in the planning stage. How unfortunate for us that this was not considered.

Chester Heights and Middletown have ordinances that would limit nighttime operations at the rail yard. Local ordinances should be enforced.

Residents, negatively impacted by this situation, should share their concern with the appropriate township/borough representatives.

The Quiet Zone at Lenni petition at Change.org has brought together 200 neighbors. Please consider joining with us.

Our health and well-being are of the upmost importance.
