Culbertson hit boosts Fords past West Chester East

Maddie Culbertson had the game-winning hit and Lucy Wolf went the distance to pitch a win as Haverford High opened its softball season with a 3-2, eight-inning win Friday over West Chester East.

Wolf struck out nine in gaining the victory. East counterpar­t Rebecca Opperman notched seven strikeouts. East had hits by Carley Bickle and Grace Koberg.

Girls Lacrosse

Ridley’s Abby Axe had three goals and four assists but the Green Raiders feel short in a 9-7 Kennett victory Friday.

Kasey O’Neill and Callie Bryan had two goals each for Ridley, while Bridget Wells had four goals and Quinn Simmons had three to lead Kennett. Grace DeCarolis made eight saves in net for Ridley.

Baseball

Ryan Getz homered, doubled and collected four RBIs to lead Haverford

School to its third straight win to open the season, a 7-5 victory over Strath Haven Friday.

Joey Pennewill had three hits while Mark Quatrani chipped in with a pair. Fred Jordan struck out seven over four shutout innings to pick up the win. Ryan Davey pitched out of the seventh for a save.

Jake McDonough hit a three-run home run and had four RBIs for the Panthers.

EPISCOPAL ACADEMY 13, CARROLL 1 » Zach LaTour tripled home three runs and Owen Pfeiffer scored two runs and knocked in a pair to lead the Churchmen to victory.

Ryan Tansky scored three runs and Brad Johnston and Jack Gallagher had two runs scored.

Friends Central 14, Delco Christian 0 >> Julian Abreu doubled and homered, while Luca Frattone, Michael McGarry and Shane McGarry all doubled for Friends Central.

Cody Dill reached base in all three of his plate appearance­s and stole a couple of bases for the Knights.
