100 Years Ago, 1923: Charged with drunkennes­s, disorderly conduct and furnishing intoxicati­ng liquor to a minor, two 21-year-olds, of 1104 W. Eighth St. and 1110 W. Eight St., were, in default of $800 bail each, committed for a further hearing following their preliminar­y arraignmen­t before Committing Magistrate Elliott in police court yesterday morning. This morning, the two men and the girl in the case, 17, of Tenth Street and Highland Avenue, were each fined $5 and costs and held for examinatio­n. About 10:30 o’clock Saturday night, a citizen telephoned to police headquarte­rs, alleging that two young men were acting in a disorderly manner on Eight Street near Sproul Street, and were also endeavorin­g to get a girl intoxicate­d.

75 Years Ago, 1948: A $50,000,000 highway modernizat­ion program — including completion of the Industrial Highway and depression of the B. and O. tracks through Chester — was recommende­d to the State Highway Department today by the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce. At the same time, James J. Skelly, chairman of the chamber’s highway committee, disclosed that the state has ordered immediate completion of the Industrial Highway, regardless of the controvers­ial Quonset hut situation in Chester.

50 Years Ago, 1973: Lt. Cmdr.

John S. McCain 3rd, a North Vietnamese prisoner of war for more than five years, and his wife are in seclusion at a Florida beach cottage today. McCain, 30, arrived at the Jacksonvil­le (Fla.) Naval Air Station Saturday where he was met by his wife, Carol, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Shepp, 158 Midway Ave., Lansdowne. Mrs. McCain now lives in Orange Park, Fla., with their three children. “I spoke to him yesterday,” Mrs. Shepp said today, “and he sounds just great.”

25 Years Ago, 1998: Parkside Borough Council last night approved the purchase of 55new street signs at a cost of $14each. Councilman Frank Caso said the new signs will replace rusted old signs on the west side of the borough that are over 25 years old. The council looked into purchasing street signs with the borough logo on each side similar to those in Chester, but were told that they would cost $70each.

10 Years Ago, 2013: Former East Lansdowne Borough Manager Marius Russ Russo will be remembered in the borough’s Fourth of July ad book this year. When Mayor James France asked for approval for council to spend $100 to cover the cost of a tribute to honor Russo in the book, the borough engineer, Sande Walton, of NDI Engineerin­g, offered to cover the expense.
