Days Gone By

100 Years Ago, 1923: Despite the fact that “No Left-Hand Turn” signs are posted on all four corners at the intersection of Ninth Street and Edgmont Avenue, there are some autoists who persist in openly violating the regulations, adopted as a precautionary measure against accidents at that point. Last evening a violation was witnessed by Mayor Ramsey, who obtained the license number on the car driven by the autoist and today a warrant was issued for his arrest.

75 Years Ago, 1948: With the resumption of service on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad’s main line through Chester yesterday afternoon came some of the worst motor traffic tieups the city has ever faced. At times during the late afternoon and evening rush hours, hundreds of vehicles — autos, buses and trucks — were lined up solidly for five blocks below the railroad and several blocks above, while long, slow-moving freights rumbled over the 12th Street grade crossings. Some drivers sought to escape the bottlenecks by detouring over 24th Street to Upland Avenue and at Ninth and Kerlin, only to find themselves hung up again.

50 Years Ago, 1973: Do you understand home rule? No? Well, join the crowd. Friends and enemies of home rule have been talking about it for months, and — if the questions the Daily Times has been getting from readers are representative — the public is becoming more confused every time someone “explains it.” On Monday, the Daily Times will begin a special series of easy-to-understand articles on what Delaware Countians will be voting upon at the May 15 primary election and how that vote could affect them.

25 Years Ago, 1998: A Delaware County neighborhood has been added to the National Register of Historic Places, it was announced by

Gov. Ridge. The Henry Alberton Historic District in Lansdowne, roughly bounded by North Lansdowne, Clover, Wycombe, Price and Stewart avenues, and Balfour Circle, is recognized as an outstanding example of a small late 19th and early 20th century residential development built in connection with the Pennsylvania Railroad’s suburban development.

10 Years Ago, 2013: A patron in a 69th Street area bar was arrested early Thursday morning for allegedly threatening to kill people, Upper Darby police said. The Philadelphia man, 26, was taken into custody after police responded to a call 1:50 a.m. March 21. “Nothing good ever happens after midnight. Fortunately this time nobody got hurt. This happened at… one of the problem bars I’m always trying to shut down. He was armed with a fully loaded, semiautomatic gun with the serial number obliterated,” said police Superintendent Michael Chitwood.
