Cub Pack 44 announces Pinewood Derby winners

GLENOLDEN » Cub Pack 44 of Glenolden recently hosted its annual Pinewood Derby Race.

Community members, including a local police officer, came to judge best of show. It is a fun event where the kids gathered around and cheered one another on to see who would win.

First place went to Eli Oden, second to John “Leo” Nicewinter and third to Will Britt.

Colonial Pennsylvan­ia Plantation holds Sheep Shearing Day

The community is invited to Colonial Pennsylvan­ia Plantation to see its flock of sheep get their annual haircuts, Saturday, April 1.

Visitors can learn about and participat­e in many of the steps used to turn that wool into cold weather clothing, including washing, carding, spinning and dyeing. While there, visit the farmhouse, the garden, and all of the animals.

Admission is $12 for adults, $8 for children and $5 for members. The farm is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the last admission at 3 p.m.

The plantation is an independen­t, nonprofit 18th-century living history museum within Ridley Creek State Park at 3900 N. Sandy Flash Drive, Newtown Square.

Newtown Square in Bloom Tour Day at Chanticlee­r Garden

Newtown Square in Bloom will welcome residents to Chanticlee­r Garden for a “come anytime” tour day on Saturday, May 6. The event is an opportunit­y for the first-time visitor, as well as the Chanticlee­r season pass holder.

Members of Newtown Square in Bloom will be at the entrance to help attendees secure their free parking space and to locate the group.

General Admission to Chanticlee­r

is $12 at the main entrance of the Garden, 786 Church Road, Wayne.

Events include:

• 11 to 11:45 a.m.: House and Garden Morning Tour, which will feature garden history and a walk through the first floor of the Chanticlee­r House. In Bloom will pay the $5 fee for those who have pre-registered on NSiB Sign-Up Genius. Tour space is limited to 12 visitors.

• Noon to 1:45 p.m.: there will be a picnic brown bag lunch at NSIB tables. NSiB will provide cookies, cake, sodas and bottled water for any NSiB attendees. Chanticlee­r asks all guests to carry out what they bring in and not leave picnic items unattended.

• 2 to 2:45 p.m.: Garden Highlights Afternoon Tour will provide a knowledgea­ble Chanticlee­r guide for a tour featuring seasonal highlights. Tour content varies since the garden is dynamic and ever-changing. NSiB will be pay the $5 fee for those who have pre-registered on NSiB Sign-Up Genius.

The anytime option for every visit with NSiB is a self-guided option throughout the day with garden map and a brief introducti­on to the garden by Chanticlee­r staff, or people can sign up for just the morning tour and the picnic lunch.

Reservatio­ns are limited and required to provide confirmati­on for

parking spaces. Drivers registered on the NSiB Sign-Up Genius form will receive a code for access to the NSiB reserved parking spaces by email.

Newtown Square in Bloom, an allvolunte­er nonprofit, raises funds and welcomes volunteers for a number of planting projects, such as the floral hanging baskets on the town center streets, the Newtown Township Welcome Signs, bus stops, and the St. Albans Circle.

Volunteers from many of the township’s residentia­l organizati­ons and businesses join in to help plant flowers and trees, develop a trail network, clean up parks and streams on Arbor Day, weed and maintain the Drexel Lodge Park Pollinator Garden and help enhance the significan­ce of the historical buildings.

Monthly Newtown Square in Bloom meetings are open to all Newtown Square residents who wish to join.

Upcoming Zoom meeting dates are 1:30 p.m. on April 19, May 17, June 14, July 19, Aug. 16, Sept. 13, Oct. 18, Nov. 15, and Dec. 14.

Collage Dance Collective offers free classes and performanc­es at Swarthmore College

The William J. Cooper Foundation, with the Department of Music and Dance at Swarthmore College, will present Collage Dance Collective in performanc­e, Friday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 1 at 3 p.m., in the Pearson-Hall Theatre in the Lang Performing Arts Center on the Swarthmore College campus.

Four ballet classes, all open to the public, ages 15 and above, will be held and taught by Collage artistic staff and Amy Hall Garner.

Classes include Advanced Ballet, Monday, March 27, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Intermedia­te Ballet, Tuesday, March 28, 2:40 to 4:10 p.m.; Advanced Ballet, Wednesday, March 29, 11:30 to 1 p.m.; and Intermedia­te Ballet, Thursday, March 30, 2:40 to 4:10 p.m. All classes take place in the Lang Performing Arts Center, Boyer Dance Studio.

The centerpiec­e of the program, Collage’s artistic director Kevin Thomas’ ballet “Rise” honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and is set to his final speech, which took place at Mason Temple in Memphis. Caio Rodrigo dos Santos, now in his fifth season with Collage Dance Collective, will dance the lead as King.

In addition to Collage Dance Collective’s profession­al ballet company, nearly 30 students from the Swarthmore community, including 12 at Swarthmore College, will perform in “Rise.”

This program is also set to feature the world premiere of “Gems,” a contempora­ry ballet choreograp­hed by Amy Hall Garner and centering Swarthmore students, plus Garner’s vibrant tribute to Memphis culture, Bluff City Blues, last performed to sold-out crowds at the Kennedy Center in Washington.

Volunteers needed to beautify Friendship Circle’s garden

Friendship Circle Senior Center, on the campus of Trinity Mercy Hospital in Darby, is looking for volunteers to help beautify the Center’s garden and learn to beautify home gardens. Classes will take place in the spring and summer on the first and fourth Monday at 11 a.m. of each month starting in April. All levels of expertise are welcome.

On Monday, April 3 at 11 a.m., volunteers can take part in an educationa­l horticultu­ral program with Master Gardeners from Penn State Brandywine as they show attendees how to prepare the gardens for the coming season.

Dig in the soil and gain handson experience Monday, April 24 at 11 a.m. and develop creative garden containers that will be highlighte­d throughout the season.

Friendship Circle, one the four accredited Senior Community Services centers, is committed to helping older adults stay physically and mentally active to ensure a better quality of life.

Vitali moves satellite office to Broomall

State Rep. Greg Vitali of the 166th Legislativ­e District announced that Wednesday was his final day at the Ardmore Library satellite office.

Beginning March 30, his satellite office will be located in Trinity Christian Reformed Church in Marple, 144 Lawrence Road, near St. Pius Catholic School.

Satellite office hours will continue to be on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. No appointmen­ts are required.

This office is on the ground floor and handicappe­d accessible.

All services offered in the district office will be available in the satellite office, including SEPTA Key Senior IDs, notary services, and property tax rent rebate assistance.
