At Newlin Grist Mill, explore foods of German settlers
Plus Delco Hero Bowl, concert, fireworks, movie in park and more
CONCORD TOWNSHIP » All are invited to learn about the German food heritage of early Pennsylvania with upcoming programs at Newlin Grist Mill, 219 Cheyney Road, Glen Mills.
On Saturday, June 10, the site will host a lecture by culinary historian Dr. William Woys Weaver, along with a cooking demonstration by food-ways historian Dr. Clarissa Dillon.
Weaver’s talk, “Foods of the Pennsylvania Dutch, 17001850,” will take place at 4 p.m. in the site’s Log Cabin.
In it, he will cover the complex cultural and culinary themes that have evolved into a distinctive regional food identity. As an internationally known food historian and author, Weaver has studied and written extensively about the German influence on Pennsylvania food-ways.
This presentation kicks off this season’s Newlin Series, which is themed around regional food history and “the mid-Atlantic melting pot.”
The cost for the talk is $5 for Newlin Grist Mill members, $10 for nonmembers. Pre-registration is suggested.
That same day, attendees can visit the site’s newly restored Trimble House kitchen between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., for an open-hearth cooking demonstration.
Dillon will be preparing historical recipes, translated from German, that reflect the cuisine of early GermanAmericans in 18th-century Pennsylvania. The demonstration is part of Newlin’s History at Work series, which
is being held in coordination with this year’s Newlin Series programs and will demonstrate a variety of historic food-ways traditions.
There is no cost for the demonstration, which will be ongoing throughout the day. To register for the lecture or for more information, call the site at 610-459-2359.
