Man City beats United in FA Cup final for second leg of treble bid

-

LONDON » The second leg of Manchester City’s treble mission is secure.

Add the FA Cup, after a 2-1 win over great rival Manchester United on Saturday, to its latest Premier League title.

Now only a first ever Champions League title stands between City and immortality.

“We’re in a position,” City manager Pep Guardiola said, “that we’ll probably never be in again.”

Ilkay Gundogan scored two goals — the first inside 13 seconds, for the quickest in 142 years of FA Cup finals — to lead City to a 16th trophy since 2011 in what is looking like the crowning season in the tenure of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family.

If the German midfielder’s opener, a perfectly executed volley from the edge of area, was probably his best goal of his seven years at City, his 51st-minute winner at Wembley Stadium might be one of his scrappiest.

This time it was a volley with his left foot after being picked out by Kevin De Bruyne’s free kick from the right wing. The ball bobbled between two United defenders and squirmed past goalkeeper David De Gea, who might have been slightly unsighted but should have done better.

Barcelona rallies to Women’s UCL title

EINDHOVEN, NETHERLANDS » Midfielder Patricia Guijarro ignited a stunning second-half comeback as

Barcelona overturned a two-goal deficit to beat Wolfsburg 3-2 and win its second Women’s Champions League title.

Fridolina Rolfö capped the fightback by calmly firing the winner into the far corner of the net after a mix-up in the Wolfsburg defense in the 70th minute.

Wolfsburg led 2-0 at the break thanks to goals from Ewa Pajor and Alexandra Popp.

But Barcelona kept believing it could win, easing the pain of last year’s final when the Catalan team never recovered after Lyon scored three times in the first 35 minutes in a 3-1 loss.

Messi bids farewell to PSG

Lionel Messi didn’t care about the boos in his final game for Paris Saint-Germain as the French champion lost to Clermont 3-2.

PSG supporters booed Messi when the Parc des Princes announcer read his name on a warm evening. A few minutes later,

Messi walked onto the field with a smile, holding his three children’s hands before the team photo and kissing them on their foreheads before kickoff.

“I would like to thank the club, the city of Paris and its people for these two years. I wish you all the best for the future,” Messi told the club website.

In two seasons at PSG, Messi won two French leagues and the French Champions Trophy and notched 32 goals and 35 assists in all competitions.
