100 YEARS AGO, 1923 » Delaware Countians in large numbers are going to Franklin Field, Philadelph­ia, tomorrow to witness the championsh­ip football games between Ridley Park High’s undefeated team and the Norristown High School eleven, undefeated for two seasons and holders of the Montgomery County title. The game has been in the making for some time past. Whether the Brown University trophy, emblematic of the Suburban Championsh­ip of Philadelph­ia will go to the winner is a matter that has not been finally decided on at this writing.

75 YEARS AGO, 1948 » The use of high school bands at Sun Ship launchings will be discussed at a meeting of the executive board of Chester Local 484, AF of M, next Sunday, it was learned today. The board meeting will be held in conjunctio­n with the annual election of officers at Carpenters Union Hall, Fifteenth and Esrey streets. It is understood the question arose after Media High School band appeared at the shipyard on Saturday and provided music for the launching of the first of 15 super-tankers to be constructe­d by Sun. The band, according to reliable informants, played in spite of a protest from the union that launchings are looked upon as commercial jobs to which profession­al musicians are entitled.

50 YEARS AGO, 1973 » The Save Way service station at Ninth and Welsh streets, Chester, formerly an independen­t cut rate station, fell victim to the energy crisis Wednesday. The station was closed to business and the office boarded up. A spokesman in the Radnor office of Save way and Merit service stations said the station was closed because “we have been unable to get as much gasoline as in the past.”

25 YEARS AGO, 1998 » Troubled Veterans

Stadium was the scene of a neartraged­y yesterday when nine cadets tumbled 15 feet to the field after a 20foot section of railing collapsed during the fourth quarter of Army’s 3430 victory over Navy. One cadet had a broken neck but no spinal cord injuries, officials said. The railing that gave way was held together by duct tape, witnesses said.

10 YEARS AGO, 2013 » A three-month undercover investigat­ion dubbed “Operation My Block” has led to the arrest of 17 alleged drug dealers in Collingdal­e, who authoritie­s say commandeer­ed various neighborho­od blocks and forced local residents to live in fear. The mission of the operation was to take back those neighborho­ods and put the drug dealers responsibl­e for plying their wares to area young people and others behind bars, District Attorney Jack Whelan said.
