100 YEARS AGO, 1924 » Following the adoption of an ordinance creating the position of city electricia­n, whose duty it will be to take charge of, care for and do all the electrical work of the city department­s, particular­ly as it relates to keeping in order the police call and fire alarm system, Mayor Turner yesterday presented to City Council a resolution providing for the appointmen­t of Elmer C. Weigand, who will be under the immediate jurisdicti­on of the Department of Public Affairs. The resolution was adopted and the appoint unanimousl­y approved. Mr. Weigand, who has been in the employe of the Delaware County Electric Company, will assume charge of his new duties at once.

75 YEARS AGO, 1949 » A three-story building used for the storage of machinery at the Sackville Mills, Wallingfor­d, was burned shortly before 10.30 a.m. today when a field fire across Ridley Creek jumped the stream and ignited the building. The building is about 140 years old, according to R.H. Sack, proprietor of the mills. The roof of the building was destroyed.

50 YEARS AGO, 1974 » The state approved a grant Monday of $3.4 million to the Southeaste­rn Pennsylvan­ia Transporta­tion Authority (SEPTA) to reimburse the Penn Central Railroad, which will avoid a threatened shutdown of rail commuter service. The grant is the state’s share of $5.75 million purchase of service contract between SEPTA and Penn Central. The remaining money is to come from county government­s, which have already approved the payment. The lack of state money had forced a threatened closing of Penn Central commuter lines.

25 YEARS AGO, 1999 » Tinicum police are looking for a man dressed in full military fatigues who held up a Wawa food market at gunpoint. He was wearing a set of solid green military fatigues with black boots and a camouflage green military hat. His shirt sleeve bore the insignia of a Private First Class of the U.S. Army. Police say he appeared to be drunk. The suspect fled in a black or dark blue General Motors car, possibly an older model Buick or Oldsmobile.

10 YEARS AGO, 2014 » A traffic stop led to the arrest of a 29-year-old Upper Providence man on charges of possession of heroin with the intent to deliver, according to Yeadon police. The suspect was pulled over Friday afternoon after he was seen running a stop sign and driving the wrong way on a one-way street. Sgt. Shawn Burns spoke with the man, who said he was headed to a Dunkin’ Donuts and was in a hurry to get home and was not familiar with the area.
