100 YEARS AGO, 1924 » The latest of the season was mentioned today by a Chester florist as the cause for the scarcity of cut flowers for Easter. A visit to several of the leading flower shops this morning revealed there were only a few cut blooms and an abundance of potted plants. Prices for the latter are reported to be 25 percent higher than last year. A visit of several shops revealed that Easter lilies were bring forty cents a bloom for the better grades.

75 YEARS AGO, 1949 » It was back to the books today for public school students in Chester and many communitie­s throughout the county as Easter vacation became just a memory of colored eggs and new outfits. Parochial school students, on the other hand, continued to ply baseball and take in an afternoon movie show. They won’t resume classes until next Monday. This week their instructor­s are participat­ing in the convention of the National Catholic Education Associatio­n at Philadelph­ia.

50 YEARS AGO, 1974 » Seven Delaware County Prison inmates were rushed to two hospitals Thursday afternoon after they were found suffering from apparent drug overdoses. Two were reported in guarded condition today in the intensive care unit at CrozerChes­ter Medical Center in Upland. Four others were listed in fair condition at Crozer. The seventh prisoner were reported in satisfacto­ry condition at Riddle Hospital, Middletown. Four other inmates also apparently took the drug were not made seriously ill. According to a medical center spokesman, the drug the inmates took was believed to be Elavil, an anti-depressant tranquiliz­er which was apparently taken in tablet form.

25 YEARS AGO, 1999 » Daniel L. Smith, of Elwyn, Middletown, is attempting to rally Pennsylvan­ia residents to support the effort of southern New Jersey residents to bring the battleship USS New Jersey to the Camden Philadelph­ia riverfront area as a permanent memorial. The group has a website to keep everyone informed on developmen­ts and what individual­s can do to help, Smith said. “”The fight is not over and the Camden-Philadelph­ia waterfront is a front runner to receive the ship because of all the support and involvemen­t within the community,” Smith said.

10 YEARS AGO, 2014 » Media council has responded to an offer by Media Real Estate which further delays the developmen­t of the Wawa project at Baltimore Avenue and Providence Road. Whether or not the action closes the door on the applicatio­n remains to be seen. Council ratified a decision to reject a monetary and land swap offer discussed and approved in executive session, said President Brian Hall.
