John Millman upset topseeded Richard Gasquet 7-5, 6-3 in the Winston-Salem (N.C.) Open quarterfin­als.

Millman advanced to his first ATP World Tour semifinal. The 27-year-old Australian is unseeded and 81st in the ATP rankings.

Gasquet, 15th in the ATP rankings, holds the No. 13 seed in the U.S. Open, which begins Monday in New York. The Frenchman was playing his fifth match in six weeks after retiring in the fourth round at Wimbledon because of back problems. He returned last week in Cincinnati and lost in the second round.

Elina Svitolina advanced to the semifinals with a relatively easy 6-3, 6-1 victory over Olympics doubles champion Elena Vesnina.

Svitolina, the 21-year-old Ukrainian player who upset Serena Williams in Rio, outran her Russian opponent and took advantage of 33 unforced errors. Svitolina will face Johanna Larsson today.

Larsson continued her improbable run in New Haven, upsetting second-seeded Roberta Vinci of Italy 7-6 (9), 6-1. The 28-yearold Swede lost in qualifying, but got into the main draw when Svetlana Kuznetsova withdrew because of a shoulder injury.

Cowboys quarterbac­k Tony Romo appeared to injure his back on the third play of Thursday night’s preseason game at Seattle after getting pulled down from behind by Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril.

Romo was forced from the pocket by a blitz from K.J. Wright. As Romo scrambled and was about to begin his slide, he was pulled down by Avril chasing in pursuit. Romo immediatel­y grabbed at his back and was tended to by trainers for a few minutes before popping up and walking off the field without any assistance.

While Dak Prescott took over, Romo spoke with medical personnel on the sideline for several minutes and he threw some passes. But when the Cowboys took the
