Deputy on leave after accusation of force

Centerville HS juvenile questioned about marijuana video.

Officials say a confrontation, reported by the deputy, occurred with a Washington Twp. teen.

A Montgomery County DAYTON — Sheriff ’s deputy is on paid administrative leave after accusations of inappropriate use of force against a teen-age boy.

The juvenile repeatedly called the deputy a racial slur as the boy was being questioned about posting a video online of himself smoking marijuana instead of going to Centerville High School, officials said.

Deputy Nathan Wilson was placed on paid leave Thursday pending further investigation, according to Major Daryl Wilson (no relation).

“From my understanding, the ( juvenile) called the deputy — who is Afro-American — several inappropriate racial names numerous times and very loudly,” Major Wilson told this news organization on Thursday.

“Just calling him the N-word repeatedly and then after a while, the deputy was pretty much letting him know you will not disrespect me that way.”

Maj. Wilson said the deputy called supervisors himself Wednesday to report the incident after speaking to the boy at his Washington Twp. home on Woodgrove Drive.

Deputy Wilson took the rest of Wednesday off as vacation time and will be checked out by a doctor, according to the major.

“By me being a man of color, and I’m speaking personally, I understand it, but I think if you talk to Nate, Nate gets it, too,” Maj. Wilson said. “I just think maybe at that point, whatever this young man said to him, whatever, we’re human. We get it,” the major said. “Nate’s actions to responding to those comments is inappropriate.”

The major said the boy was taken to a hospital, checked out and released. The major said the boy’s mother then took him to school for just the second time this school year. Officials haven’t

yet talked to the boy.

“The juvenile’s mom did state that she understands and that she’d like to make sure the deputy gets back to work as soon as possible,” Major Wilson said. “It sounds like the mom has been having issues with this young man as well.”

Major Wilson said the boy is facing possible juvenile court charges after deputies were alerted to him allegedly posting a video of himself on Snapchat smoking a “water bong” and “blunt” after not attending school.

Deputies responded and upon arrival, “observed a male ... walking towards the back part of the residence with what appeared to be a large glass marijuana pipe,” according to a Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office report.

Deputies placed the juvenile in the back of a cruiser and recovered a pipe from the residence. The juvenile was not taken downtown.

Major Wilson said all incident reports will be reviewed. “Deputy Wilson is a seasoned officer,” the major said. “He’s well respected by his peers. He’s well respected by his supervisors, respected by the community.

“I think Nate wants to put this behind him and move on, because Nate is definitely a value to our office and to the community.”
