always looking ahead. Every year is different, that’s one thing I know about playing in this league.”

Mitchell was attracted to San Francisco in part because he played one season under new 49ers defensive line coach Jeff Zgonina in Houston and was a teammate with the Texans with another 49ers defensive assistant, DeMeco Ryans.

Browns:

Of the four compensatory picks Cleveland was awarded for April’s draft, two have already been traded away. The Browns received one selection in the third round (No. 103 overall), two in the fourth (Nos. 139 and 142) and one in the fifth (No. 183). However, the thirdround pick will go to the Patriots as part of the trade for linebacker Jamie Collins in October. And one of the fourth-round picks (No. 139) will transfer to the Eagles as part of last year’s blockbuster deal in which the Browns traded down from No. 2 overall.

As a result of sanctions imposed because of improper use of walkie-talkies during a Sunday night game against the Cowboys last December, the team’s fourth-round pick in the upcoming draft will drop 10 spots to No. 140 overall, the NFL announced. The Giants now will pick after the final compensatory pick in the fourth round.

Giants:

Jonathan Quick made 32 saves in his return from a groin injury, and Tyler Toffoli scored two of Los Angeles’ four third-period goals.

Mika Zibanejad scored 1:16 into overtime for the Rangers, who tied it on Adam Clendening’s goal with 4:25 left in regulation. Antti Raanta had 36 saves, including a stop on a breakaway by Kyle Palmieri just before Zibanejad scored. New Jersey scored three goals in a 2:46 span bridging the second and third periods to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead. Palmieri scored twice in 47 seconds in the third to give New Jersey the lead.

Filip Forsberg scored the goahead goal, his seventh in three games, and had two assists for Nashville, which scored three in the second period for a 3-1 lead.

Josh Anderson and Nick Foligno each scored twice as Columbus looked sharp after its five-day bye, chasing Islanders goalie Thomas Greiss with three scores in the first period. Backup goaltender Joonas Korpisalo stopped all 24 shots for the Blue Jackets.

Andrew Shaw scored 1:06 into overtime as Montreal beat Toronto for the 14th consecutive time. Carey Price stopped 32 shots for Montreal, including a breakaway by Auston Matthews in OT. Matthews scored twice to reach 30 goals in his rookie season.

Sidney Crosby scored his league-leading 34th goal and Matt Murray made 35 saves for the Penguins in an outdoor game at Heinz Field. Matt Cullen’s goal at 1:50 of the third period gave the Penguins a 3-1 lead. Late
