Panthers trade DE Ealy to Patriots for draft pick

Longtime Steelers linebacker Lawrence Timmons signed a $12 million, two-year contract with Miami, one of several moves designed to shore up a defense that allowed a franchise-record 6,122 yards last year. Agreed to terms to bring back wideout Terrance Williams. Williams, the No. 2 receiver behind Dez Bryant, is reportedly getting a $17 million, fouryear contract.

Dallas also came to terms on a one-year deal with free agent defensive tackle Stephen Paea, who fills the void left by Terrell McClain’s departure a day earlier.

Finalized their contract with tackle Riley Reiff and also agreed to terms with another free agent tackle, Mike Remmers, formerly of the Panthers. The 6-foot-6, 305-pound Reiff was the Lions’ left tackle until last season, when he was moved to the right side.

Signed free agent linebacker­s Jabaal Sheard (Patriots) and John Simon (Texans). Linebacker Barkevious Mingo, the No. 6 overall pick in 2013 by Cleveland, signed with the Colts on Thursday after also spending last season in New England.

Pittsburgh forward Tom Sestito said Friday he disagrees with the NHL’s ruling to suspend him four games for a hit on Winnipeg defenseman Toby Enstrom on Wednesday. “I’ve got no choice but to serve them,” Sestito said. The NHL ruled that Sestito’s first-period hit on Enstrom constitute­d boarding. Enstrom has been diagnosed with a concussion.

Gordie Howe is watching over the Hockey Hall of Fame, which unveiled a nearly 8-foot statue of the late Red Wings star Friday. Howe’s sons, Mark and Marty, participat­ed in the ceremony in Toronto. “For Dad to be honored this way — he would never say it — but, yeah, he deserved it,”said Mark Howe.
