A new weather system moving into the area by late this evening could bring several inches of snow with it.

Though the first day of spring is just a week away, it will feel a whole lot like winter as temperatures and snow begin to fall later this evening.

Much of the Miami Valley is under a Winter Weather Advisory this afternoon through Tuesday afternoon, issued by the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Brett Collar said the region should anticipate a new weather system moving into the area by late this evening, which could bring several inches of snow with it. Current models show a mixture of rain and snow, though Collar believes we’ll likely see more snow than rain.

The exact timing of snowfall is “tricky” to anticipate, according to Collar, who says that evening

commutes tonight could be impacted by snow.

“As we head into the sunset hours Monday, that’s when we really anticipate things to pick up,” he said.

That snowfall is expected to continue through tonight and into Tuesday morning, with accumulation overnight adding up to between 1 and 2 inches.

While commutes could be impacted, the snowfall isn’t expected to cause too much trouble. Collar said road crews should have enough of a heads up to clear the roads heading into Tuesday morning.

Snow is expected to taper off by Tuesday afternoon.

Collar said counties south of Montgomery like Warren and Butler could see more rain and “traces” of snow, while areas to the north are likely to see heavier accumulations.

It will stay cold on Wednesday, with partly cloudy skies and highs near freezing.

We’ll get back into the upper 30s on Thursday under mostly sunny skies.

The chance for rain returns on Friday with highs in the middle 40s.
