Dallas Green, the toughtalking manager who guided the Philadelphia Phillies to their first World Series championship, died Wednesday. He was 82.
The Phillies said Green died at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia. He had been in poor health for a while.
Green spent 62 years in baseball as a player, manager, general manager, team president and other roles.
“He was a big man with a big heart and a biggerthan-life personality,” Phillies Chairman David Montgomery said.
As a major league pitcher, Green went just 20-22 in the 1960s.
Instead, it was in the dugout where the gruff, 6-foot-5 Green really found his voice — and a booming one, it was.
In 1980, with Pete Rose playing first base on a team that included future Hall of Famers Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton, Green guided the Phillies to the World Series championship, ending a drought that stretched back nearly a century.
Midway through that season, he really let the Phils hear it after a loss in Pittsburgh left them around .500. His clubhouse tirade was so loud that writers outside the locker room at Three Rivers Stadium said they could hear every word.
Green later managed the Yankees and the Mets. Green also was the GM and president of the Cubs.
Green is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sylvia; four children; and five grandchildren.
Twins:
Right-hander Trevor May had Tommy John surgery that will keep him off the mound this season. May, 27, was placed on the 60-day disabled list, making room for the Twins to add left-hander Craig Breslow to the 40-man roster. Breslow, 36, is among the finalists for a middle relief role.
Carlos Martinez and not Adam Wainwright will start the April 2 opener against the Cubs. Wainwright had started the past four openers.

Greg Bird homered twice and had five RBIs in Wednesday’s 7-3 win over the Phillies. Bird, who missed all of 2016 with a shoulder injury, was named the opening day first baseman by manager Joe Girardi.

Brandon Crawford scored the tiebreaking run when Nobuhiro Matsuda bobbled Adam Jones’ grounder to third in the eighth inning, and the U.S. reached the championship game at rainy Dodger Stadium on Tuesday. Andrew McCutchen drove in an early run for the U.S., which played Puerto Rico for the title Wednesday night.
Kemba Walker scored 22 points and reserve Marco Belinelli added 20 as Charlotte rallied past Orlando. Frank Kaminsky scored 13 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter.
Isaiah Thomas scored 25 points and Avery Bradley had 18 for Boston. Al Horford added 15 points with eight rebounds for the Celtics.
Bradley Beal scored 28 points and John Wall had 22 points and 10 assists in Washington’s victory. Nikola Mirotic scored a season-high 28 points as Chicago routed Detroit to tie the slumping Pistons for ninth in the Eastern Conference. Chicago’s Robin Lopez and Toronto’s Serge Ibaka were suspended one game without pay by the NBA for fighting. Lopez and Ibaka threw punches at one another during the Bulls-Raptors game Tuesday. Lopez was barred from Chicago’s home game with Detroit on Wednesday, and Ibaka will not play when Toronto visits Miami tonight. Also, Raptors assistant coach Jamaal Magloire was fined $15,000 for his role in the altercation.
NBA rebounding leader Hassan Whiteside is listed as probable for tonight against Toronto, despite a deep cut on his right hand that needed 13 stitches.
