Students duped by DeVry’s ‘deceptive’ ads get refund

- By Max Filby

DeVry University students who may have been lured to the forprofit school by false advertising are eligible for a refund.

The United States Federal Trade Commission will send refund checks to people before the end of summer, according to the FTC’s website. The payouts are part of the FTC’s $49.4 million settlement with DeVry over “deceptive advertising.” Students are eligible for a partial refund if they attended the school anytime between Jan. 1, 2008 and Oct. 1, 2015; if they paid at least $5,000 in cash, loans or military aid; if they did not receive debt or loan forgiveness as part of the FTC settlement and if they completed at least one class credit, according to the FTC.

Students do not need to do anything to receive the refund as the FTC is using DeVry records to identify eligible students.

DeVry operates four locations in Ohio, including ones in Dayton, Columbus , Cincinnati and in Seven Hills, Ohio, near Cleveland, according to DeVry’s website. The Dayton-area office is located at 3610 Pentagon Blvd. in Beavercreek.

DeVry’s settlement with the federal government came in a year of turmoil for for-profit colleges.

ITT Tech shuttered all of its locations in 2016. ITT had 130 locations across the country and nine in Ohio including some in Dayton, Columbus and Cincinnati.

Therewereabout2,000students who attended the Ohio locations, state officials have said. ITT’s closure followed the shuttering of several other area for profit schools.

After 100 years in Dayton, Miami-Jacobs announced last July it would no longer accept new students at its Dayton, Springboro, Troy and Sharonville campuses. The art Institute of Ohio in Cincinnati and Brown Mackie College in Cincinnati and Findlay also stopped accepting new students.
