TROY HAS ALL THE STRAWBERRIES

12 amazing strawberry treats you have to find at the Troy Strawberry Festival.

- By Michelle Fong

If you’re a lover of anything strawberry filled, flavored or topped, the Troy Strawberry Festival is the place for you this weekend.

Troy’s signature event, in its 41st year, will feature more strawberry-inspired treats than you can possibly imagine — from the traditional to the, well, unusual.

With the help of Troy Strawberry Festival organizers and faithful festivalgoers, we have come up with a list of things you will want to try at the festival. This list is by no means exhaustive, so check out all of your options before you overindulge. But you can’t go wrong with this list! 1. Strawberry Donuts: These are simply a must. You won’t regret the long line you will surely have to stand in over at Troy Memorial Stadium (visitor’s side) to get these yummy treats. Trust us, they are worth it. These donuts are perhaps one of the greatest Troy Strawberry Festival traditions. The donuts will be sold by the Troy Music Boosters for $10 a dozen and will help benefit Troy schools music programs.

2. Homemade Strawberry Shortcake: These yummy treats will be sold at the Troy Senior Citizens Center, 133 N. Market St. Get your shortcake one of three ways: shortcake with a biscuit, angel food cake or a standard shortcake shell. 3. Strawberry Salsa: Think of the flavor as sweet heat. The salsa is always a bigseller and will be sold by the Future Begins Today, which helps to offers scholarships to high school students. 4. Chocolate-Covered

Strawberries: It’s a classic combination that never gets old with festival-goers. Troy American Legion Post 43 Baseball and Fletcher United Methodist Church

will be selling them. 5. Strawberry Rhubarb

Crisp: The Troy High School ASTRA Club will serve up this award-winning treat. Try it plain or with ice cream. 6. Strawberry Lemon Shakeups by the Troy Rotary Club. The perfect way to quench your thirst.

7. Strawberry Cheesecake: This delicious, simple dessert available at the St. Patrick’s booth is another festival favorite.

8. Holy Cannoli: The strawberry cannoli debuted at the festival in 2012 and has quickly grown in popularity. It will be sold at the Day of Caring booth. 9. Strawberry Kettle Corn: A strawberry twist to this festival classic will be sold by His Hands Extended Sanctuary. 10. Strawberry Pickles: If you’re feeling daring, stop by the Knights of Columbus booth and see what these are all about. 11. Strawberry Milkshakes by the Troy Kiwanis Club. Heavenly!

12. Fresh Berries: If what you’re craving is simply plain strawberries, you can find those as well. The Newton Music Boosters will be selling fresh-picked strawberries from Fulton Farms. HOW TO FIND YOUR FAVORITE FOOD

With the festival split between downtown and the river levee, your best bet, if you can’t find what you’re looking for, is to stop by the information booth for a brochure or to ask for help. BEYOND THE BERRIES

Festival-goers will find more than strawberries at this festival. Expect traditional festival food and drink as well, from BBQ chicken to sandwiches, shakeups, burgers, hot dogs, sweet corn, fish, pulled pork and supersized pork tenderloin sandwiches.

Another bonus? Food booths at the festival are operated by local non-profits, meaning your purchases help support local these groups in an important fund-raiser.

Another perk with the festival downtown? Most of the restaurants and businesses downtown also will be open for business, so stop by and try something new. Many restaurants will be offering special items in honor of the berry.
