Schwartzel joins leaders at St. Jude

-

Reavie, who started two strokes behind the co-leaders, had three birdies on the front nine and an eagle on the par-5 No. 16. The 35-year-old from Arizona State earned his only win on tour at the RBC Canadian Open in 2008.

Schwartzel, who shot a 65 in the first round, began his round one stroke behind the four first-day leaders along with Matt Jones.

The 2011 Masters champion is seeking his third career victory on tour. He’s won 12 times internationally.

“If these fairways get firm (over the weekend), you’re really going to have to try to keep it in the fairway,” Schwartzel said. “If you’re missing fairways, with the greens, you’re going to miss a lot of greens, you’re going to struggle.”

Among those who missed the 1-over cut: Jason Bohn, Boo Weekley and Jim Furyk were in the cluster of players to finish at 2 over, and Rickie Fowler was 4 over.

Bernhard Langer, Kevin Sutherland and Glen Day each shot 6-under 66 to share the opening-round lead in the Principal Charity Classic at Des Moines, Iowa.

Langer won the last two senior circuit events, both majors, and is seeking to become the first player on the 50-and-over tour with wins in three straight starts since Fred Couples in 2010.

Alena Sharp shot her second straight 66 to move into a share of the lead at 12-under 132 after the second round of the Manulife LPGA Classic in Cambridge, Ontario.

Sharp, from nearby Hamilton, was tied with Lexi Thompson (65) and South Korea’s Hyo Joo Kim (68). Perrine Delacour (62) of France and American Lindy Duncan (65) were one shot back.

Felipe Aguilar of Chile followed up his strong start with a 2-under 70 to retain a twostroke lead after the second round of the Lyoness Open in Austria. Graeme Storm of England shot a 69 to stay within two strokes. Sweden’s Johan Carlsson and England’s Oliver Fisher were another stroke back in third.

Tampa Bay Rays center fielder Kevin Kiermaier is expected to miss at least two months after breaking his right hip during a slide into first base.

The 2016 Gold Glove winner left Thursday night’s win over the White Sox after jamming the hip while trying to beat out an infield hit in the fifth inning.

“It’s just a funky, awkward slide, and I’m paying for it now,” said Kiermaier, who is using crutches. “Unfortunately, that’s something I have to live with now. I expect a full recovery. This will probably be my last slide into first base for quite some time.”

Kiermaier was put on the 10-day disabled list. He’s struggled defensively, committing six errors in 62 games. He had two errors in 105 games last season.

Kiermaier, who signed a $53.5 million, six-year contract in March, is hitting .258 with seven homers and 20 RBIs.

Tampa Bay also recalled outfielder Mallex Smith from Triple-A Durham.

General manager John Mozeliak announced several moves — infielder Jhonny Peralta was designated for assignment, second baseman Kolten Wong (elbow) was activated from the DL and third base coach Chris Maloney was replaced by Mike Shildt. The Cardinals (26-32) entered play Friday just 4½ games out of the lead in division but have lost seven in a row for the first time since 2013. Peralta, 35 and in the final year of his contract, is hitting .204 with no extra-base hits in 58 at-bats this season.

Manager Clint Hurdle said he is “unplugging” Tony Watson from the closer’s role following two blown saves in Baltimore this week. Felipe Rivero and Juan Nicasio will share the closing duties for now. Watson converted his first seven save opportunities this season but has locked down just three of his last eight save chances. Watson is 4-1 with a 4.14 ERA and has allowed six home runs in 26⅓ innings.

Outfielder Yoenis Cespedes will come off the DL and rejoin the team for today’s doubleheader against the Braves. Cespedes went on the DL on April 28 with a strained left hamstring and then took a two-week break after he had tightness in his right quadriceps.

Right-hander Adam Ottavino (right shoulder inflammation) was activated from the 10-day disabled list, and right-hander Carlos Estevez was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Infielder Jurickson Profar was recalled from Triple-A, and left-hander Dario Alvarez was optioned to Round Rock.

Masahiro Tanaka’s next scheduled start was pushed back one day to Monday night at the Angels. That gives the right-hander five days between outings. Tanaka, 28, is 5-6 with a 6.55 ERA in 12 starts. He has lost five straight outings.

Baltimore played Thursday night without third baseman Manny Machado, who sustained hand and wrist injuries after being spiked on a double steal Wednesday. An MRI revealed no extensive damage.

Right-hander Chris Heston was claimed off waivers. For now, Heston will work out of the bullpen, manager Paul Molitor said.
