told me.”

While Smith’s preferred plan is to remain a wideout, he doesn’t sound like a player too hung up what position he’ll playing. Rather, Smith — who spent plenty of individual time with Meyer and wide receivers coach Zach Smith — appears to be inching closer to becoming a Buckeye.

After all, according to Smith, Ohio State is the place to be.

“You’ll have to find out when I commit, man,” Smith said with a smile. “I can’t even explain it. Anybody that hasn’t been here, if you come up here, you’ll understand why it’s the place to be. Go to a football game. Trust me. It’s the place to be.”

Appearing in 12 games as a junior, Smith recorded 43 receptions for 736 yards and nine touchdowns for Wayne, which also has produced former Ohio State star Braxton Miller and current defensive tackle Robert Landers. As a sophomore, Smith caught 54 passes for 1,311 yards and 17 scores while playing alongside current Michigan State quarterback Messiah deWeaver.

A standout basketball player who averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds per game as a junior, many believed Smith could play two sports at the next level. He since decided his days on the hardwood are behind him, opting instead to focus solely on football.

“I want to be on the field, catching touchdowns,” Smith said. “The field is my calling.”

In addition to the Buckeyes, the state’s No. 4 player in 2018 also holds offers from Michigan, Cincinnati, Kentucky and Tennessee.
