- Golf

Golfers from 10 states and Ontario will be among the 78 participating in the U.S. Amateur qualifier on Monday at Moraine Country Club.

They will be vying for three spots in the U.S. Am, Aug. 14-20 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Entrants include Jeff Scohy of Bellbrook, who played in the 2010 U.S. Am at Chambers Bay.

Others in the field: Matt Buse of Miamisburg, winner of the recent Ohio Mid-Amateur Championship; Josh Gilkison of Springboro, who won the 2016 Miami Valley Metropolitan Championship; and Kevin Grabeman of Columbus, the 2012 Ohio Mid-Amateur champion.

They will play 36 holes, with tee times beginning at 7:20 a.m.

Some of the state’s finest amateur golfers will visit Springfield Country Club to participate in the 111th Ohio Amateur Championship, which begins Tuesday.

A field of 147 will play 72 holes. It will be the fifth time Springfield Country Club has hosted the event.

Ten years ago, when the Ohio Am last visited Springfield, the winner was Jason Kokrak of Warren and Xavier University. Kokrak has made more than $7 million on the PGA Tour since then.

The Miami Valley contingent in this year’s Ohio Am includes Jeff Scohy and Pete Samborsky, who have teed it up in the event many times. Samborsky has 10 top-20 finishes in 13 starts. Scohy, who tied for second in 2004, has had three other top-20 finishes in 10 starts.

Austin Sipe of Centerville tied for fourth last year. Ryan Flick tied for 12th and Ryan Wenzler tied for 16th. Others in the field include City champion Paul Day and reigning Miami Valley Metropolitan champ Josh Gilkison.

Walnut Grove crew saves USGA event:

Without a great effort from green superintendent Randy Boudinot’s crew at Walnut Grove Country Club, the U.S. Women’s Amateur qualifier on Thursday might not have been completed.

After heavy rain pelted the course, some of the greens had to be squeegied in order for play to continue following a 30-minute delay.

The 94 players, some from out of state, were able to complete their rounds, albeit a little late. The co-medalists were Wad Phaewchimplee, a 22-year-old native of Bangkok, Thailand, who played on the Kent State golf team. She and Mia Kness of Venetia, Pa., posted 4-under-par 68s. Kness plays for Seton Hall University.

None of the Miami Valley entrants was among the nine qualifiers for the U.S. Women’s Am, Aug. 7-13 at San Diego Country Club.

The Miami Valley Golf Club is hosting the annual Boy Scout Pro-Am on Monday.

The City of Dayton Men’s Senior Match Play begins Thursday at Community Golf Course. Steve Block has won the last three and Steve Sandstrom won the previous two.

The City Senior Stroke Play will be July 20-21 at Kittyhawk Golf Course. Ted Harker is the defending champion. The City men’s and women’s stroke play events will be held July 29-30. Paul Day won the men’s title in 2016.

The entry deadline is approaching for the Metropolitan Championship July 20-23 at Heatherwoode Golf Club. This is the first year the women’s stroke play competition will be under the Metro banner.
