Getting there:

After a rain delay DAYTON — of just over an hour, the Dayton Dragons trailed Peoria 8-1 after seventh innings at Fifth Third Field on Friday as they went for their first series sweep in about three weeks.

Peoria wasted no time jumping on Dayton, scoring twice in the first and once in the second before adding three in the fifth for a 6-0 lead before the Dragons could get on the board.

The Dragons’ last sweep came in the first half of the season when they swept a four-game series from Fort Wayne from June 30 through July 3.

Dayton scored in the fifth when Jose Siri reached on an error and came home on a two-out error in the outfield on a ball hit by Taylor Trammell.

The Dragons left runners in scoring position in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings, going 1 for 8 with runners on base through the first six innings.

It didn’t take Siri long to extend his hitting streak to 27 games.

Dragon tales:

Siri lined a double to left-center on the second offering he saw in the first inning to extend the longest current streak in minorleague baseball and fifth-longest in Midwest League history.

Siri, the reigning Midwest League hitter of the week, is eight games shy of the MWL record and sits 43rd in alltime hitting streaks in the minors.

The longest hitting streak in minor-league history is 69 games by Joe Wilhoit of the Western League in 1919.

Siri, an outfielder from the Domincan Republic, is hitting .342 with 15 home runs since May 21 and his slugging percentage of .658 is third in the minors over the same time.

Trammell on a tear:

Siri is not the only hot-hitting Dragon.

Trammell’s first-inning single gave him a hit in 20 of his last 21 games.

Trammell is second in the MWL with 101 hits while leading the league in stolen bases (28). The Georgia native also ranks in the top five in the MWL in RBIs (54), runs (55), triples (9) and total bases (161).

Since starting out with a .181 average after being promoted from Billings on June 22, Mark Collymore has settled in. Over his last six games, Collymore is hitting .375 with a home run to raise his average to .245.

Gabrille Ovalle has also rallied from a .071 start to .208 while Shane Mardirosian is still looking for a groove, hitting just .196.

Rough debut:

It was a tough debut at Fifth Third for Alex Webb.

Webb, making the start in the place of ace Scott Moss, lasted three innings Friday, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out two and walking three.

Peoria hit back-to-back two-out home runs in the first off Webb, who allowed his third run on a bases-loaded wild pitch.

Moss leads the MWL in wins (10) and strikeouts (119).

Dayton steps out of Eastern Division play when Burlington visits Fifth Third Field tonight for a three-game set. Romero (3-7) will get the start in the series opener at 7. Burlington enters 12-15 in the second half.
