Skapik earns Kentucky Women’s Open win

- Golf

Molly Skapik of Miamisburg, a student at the University of Louisville, won the Kentucky Women’s Open golf championship Wednesday at Big Spring Country Club in Goshen.

Skapik, 21, had a 3-under-par 139 to edge Louisville teammate Lauren Hartlage by one stroke.

Skapik won the title in the same fashion that Austin Sipe won the Ohio Amateur a week ago. She made eight birdies in a sensational 7-under-par round of 64 on Tuesday to take seven-stroke lead over Hartlage at the halfway point, but she struggled to a 75 Wednesday.

The pressure of having the big lead might have affected her in the second round. After making birdie on the first hole and playing the front nine at even par, she bogeyed four holes on the back nine, including the last three, as Hartlage nearly caught her.

Amanda Dixon of Hillsboro, the 2011 Dayton District Women’s Match Play champion, was the low pro in the event with a 151 total.

Sarah Willis of Eaton, the reigning Ohio high school Division II individual champion, won the Ohio Junior Girls Championship on July 11 at Marion Country Club.

In an event shortened from 36 to 27 holes, Willis had scores of 68 and 38 for a 106 total. She defeated Madison Butler of Hinckley by one stroke.

Willis, who will be a senior at Eaton High School, has committed to play college golf at Penn State in the 2018-19 season. The Women’s Ohio State Golf Association Amateur Invitational will be held Monday through Wednesday at Belmont Country Club in Perrysburg.
