Caroline Wozniacki struggled with a left wrist injury as she lost the Swedish Open final in Bastad to Katerina Siniakova.

The 56th-ranked Siniakova, who played with a right arm injury, took advantage of Wozniacki’s inconsistent serving to win 6-3, 6-4 for her second career title.

Fabio Fognini won his fifth career title by beating 170th-ranked qualifier Yannick Hanfmann 6-4, 7-5 in Gstaad, Switzerland.

Swiss Open:

Leonardo Mayer defeated Florian Mayer 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to win the title in Hamburg, Germany.

Jhonattan Vegas successfully defended his RBC Canadian Open title Sunday, beating Charley Hoffman with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff in Oakville, Ontario.

Vegas’ approach from the left bunker on the par-5 18th hit the grass just above the sand lip and still had enough power to clear the water and go through the green.

The 32-year-old Venezuelan chipped to a foot — after racing a chip past the hole in regulation from the same area en route to a par — and won when Hoffman’s birdie try from the back bunker slid past the hole.

“It’s been a special day,” Vegas said. “When I started making a few birdies, especially the putt for birdie on 7, I started feeling the same chills that I felt last year when I won, and I just knew that something good could happen if I kept that going.”

Vegas closed with a 7-under 65 to match Hoffman at 21-under 267.

Vegas is paying close attention to the turmoil in Venezuela, noting, “It’s always on my mind. I have family that live there. It’s my country of birth. I mean, it hurts. Like I said yesterday, it hurts a lot, seeing the country the way it is … and all the suffering that even my family and friends that are having right now. It’s just not fair.”

Bernhard Langer won the Senior British Open in rain and wind at Royal Porthcawl in Bridgend, Wales, for his record-extending

Champions:

10th senior major title and fifth in the last 10.

With a sore throat in the difficult weather, the 59-yearold German star closed with a par 72 to finish at 4-under 280 and beat American Corey Pavin by three strokes.

“Wasn’t 100 percent,” Langer said. “Makes it even more meaningful.”

Langer joined Jack Nicklaus as the only players to win three senior majors in a season, and won the event for the third time to match the tournament record.

Langer won the Regions Tradition and Senior PGA Championship — the first two of the PGA Champions Tour’s five majors — in consecutive weeks in May.

Mi Hyang Lee took advantage of Hall of Famer Karrie Webb’s late double bogey to win the Ladies Scottish Open in Irvine for her second tour title.

“I didn’t believe I got a win today,” said Lee, six shots back entering the round. “It

was a really surprise for me.”

A stroke ahead of Lee with two holes left at chilly Dundonald Links, Webb dropped a shot back with the double bogey on the par-5 17th after driving into a bunker and having to play out backward.

Lee, playing in the group ahead of Webb, increased the margin to two with a birdie on the par-5 18th. Needing an eagle to force a playoff, Webb closed with a birdie to tie for second with Mi Jung Hur.

Europe:

Jordan Smith beat defending champion Alexander Levy in a two-hole playoff to win the European Open in Hamburg, Germany.

Levy was leading by a shot at the 18th hole, but the French player had to tap in a tricky par putt to force the playoff after playing partner Smith, the overnight leader, holed his 10-foot birdie to go 13 under.

Smith’s close-range birdie in the playoff secured his first tour title in his 25th event.

New England Patriots defensive stalwart Rob Ninkovich capped his 11-year NFL career by announcing his retirement Sunday after the team’s morning practice at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.

Since joining the Patriots in 2009, Ninkovich had been one of the team’s most durable and dependable players. The defensive end/linebacker was a two-time co-captain and won two Super Bowls with New England, but he didn’t take the easiest route to get there.

A fifth-round pick by the New Orleans Saints in 2006, he was waived four times by the Saints and Miami Dolphins before joining the Patriots just before the start of the 2009 season — after spending that offseason trying to make the Saints as a long snapper. Before joining New England, he had appeared in just eight games over three seasons.

With New England he missed just one game before last season, which he started with a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. From 20112015, he started every regular-season game.

Ninkovich had been absent since training camp started Thursday, for what the team called personal reasons. “I wanted to make sure I made the right choice,” he said.

The team signed cornerback Xavier Rhodes to a five-year contract extension worth a reported $70 million. Rhodes, beginning his fifth season, was picked for his first Pro Bowl in 2016, tallying a career-high five interceptions.

Rookie defensive tackle Malik McDowell did not report for the start of training camp after being involved in a vehicular accident earlier in July. The team released a statement that McDowell is home recovering from the injuries and that team doctors have been in communication about his recovery.

McDowell was placed on the reserve/did not report list. Asked if he may not play this season, coach Pete Carroll said, “We’ll see. I don’t know that.”

McDowell was Seattle’s first selection in last spring’s draft, taken in the second round out of Michigan State. He was expected to be a major contributor in Seattle’s defensive line rotation as a rookie.

Safety Glover Quin signed a contract extension through the 2019 season. Quin’s 116 consecutive regular-season starts are the most among active NFL safeties.

Cornerback Trumaine Johnson said the team is not interested in re-signing him after failing to come to terms on a long-term contract this month. Johnson, who will play under the franchise tag for the second straight season, went one step further by declaring it publicly after the team’s first day of training camp concluded Saturday.

Safety Ed Reynolds will miss “significant time” with a left knee injury, coach Hue Jackson said.

Rookie running back James Conner left the team’s first padded practice early with a shoulder injury.

Rookie Corey Davis practiced after becoming the last draft pick to sign a contract. He was the fifth overall pick and first wide receiver selected.
